we took our girl for her scan on saturday night ,its her 1st litter shes on day 33 today so she was day 31 at scan ....we saw 4 maybe 5 and could see 1 was being reabsorbed ,whats the chance she might reabsorb the rest? this is a small litter for our breed ,thanks
- By NEWFIENOOK [gb] Date 05.04.10 11:13 UTC
how do they tell if one is being readsorbed !! is it really visible
- By annastasia [gb] Date 05.04.10 11:15 UTC
They shrinnk to the size of a malteser, they are actually born with the rest of the litter but you would never know, saw it on a tv programme called puppies in the womb, it was fascinating.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 05.04.10 11:24 UTC
we could see the sacks with pups inside and the 1 being reabsorbed looked like a smaller shrunken sack with nothing inside. its very plan to see :(
- By NEWFIENOOK [gb] Date 05.04.10 14:01 UTC
i have never seen it on a scan , so now i know what too look for , its true you learn something new every day , sorry white lilly it must be awfull for you to see but wish you luck with the rest of the pups fingers crossed
- By annastasia [gb] Date 05.04.10 14:56 UTC
Sorry Joanne, its sad, hope the rest of your litter thrive.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 05.04.10 16:02 UTC
thanks guys im just hoping and praying she dont reabsorb anymore with it only being a small litter ,i dont what to end up with none or just 1 pup ,not botherd if she has 2 ,so now i have to wait and see ,we might take her again the week before to make sure of whats happening!
- By annastasia [gb] Date 05.04.10 16:05 UTC
They are such a worry arent they? hope the others are still thriving, no one knows why this happens, our last litter scan showed 5 but she only had 4, and then we lost 1 of them the day after birth.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 05.04.10 16:09 UTC
it is a worry annastasia ,from mating till well forever , i sometimes wonder why we put ourselfs though it and then i look at our puppy pics and i know why ,and when the owner get in touch to say how well the dogs are doing :) xx

Happened to me twice..scanned 1st with a decent sized litter, 2nd scan showed just one viable pup, both times I had a healthy pup born full term, very easy to see on the scan isn't it ?

Good luck and fingers crossed !

My bitch has just reabsorbed her whole litter for the 2nd time so back to the vets tomorrow, knew they were going as she hit 44 days she got her tuck up back and started to look thinner, within 48 hrs she was back to normal.

Good luck with your girl hope things go well for the rest of her pregnancy

white lilly - I have a Border Collie called Solo - clue is in the name!  :-)  :-)

His temperament is to die for, and I couldn't wish for a more willing to please boy.  It's all in how they're reared!

I've had singletons in my toy breeds, and they get loads of socialisation from myself and the rest of the gang.  So don't fear the worst!  :-)

I kept a singleton too, just over 3 years ago, and she is wonderful, fantastic temperament, a real stunning girl, the goodness of one litter in one pup!

I have had several singletons over the years, main problem with them is you get so attached to the "only one" that regardless of sez, conformation etc you end up keeping each one!  I find they are always that bit more people orientated, which is not a bad thing.  It can be a bit more time taking, as you ahve to put in the extra play time etc.

We had a singleton just over two years ago, certainly not a nightmare, she's a lovely little girl.

My singleton Papillon is now just over 4 months old. You couldn't wish for a happier, more confident pup, he's been a dream all along. His mum has spent a LOT more time playing with him than I have seen any other bitch play with pups, and I don't think he has been disadvantaged in any way by not having littermates.

BTW when his mum was scanned the first time, the scanner said there were two pups and a third being reabsorbed. The second time she scanned she said there were now two pups. Mum gave birth to two fully formed pups that had died moments before birth, and then this third one -who clearly wasn't reabsorbed at all. :)

I had a singleton last year.  He was a dream!  We treated him a little differently as he had no siblings to play with as he got older - eg he spent more time with my other girls and the family.  He was easy to get clean as he just followed my girls.  It was just such a shame it was a male pup as I didn't want to keep a male - I would have been over the moon if it had been a bitch.  The family that had him found him easy to adapt to their lifestyle etc.
Try not to worry - just enjoy....

thankyou everyone :)...

i dont care now if we have a singleton :) would be nice if she dont reabsorbe anymore but my mind has been put at rest :) xx

> ive been told 1 pup is a nightmare growing up

I have an 11year old here who was a singleton pup. The only difference I have found is that she is very people friendly :-) Her mum didn't want to bother with her. She would feed and clean her before dumping her on whoever was sitting on the sofa at the time :-p Chloe was taken out in my arms from the earliest time possible (about 3 1/2 weeks  ) and saw all the children in the playschool/nursery coming out of the school, the people in the streets, dustbins, cars, buses, everything really before she could go out properly. Nothing phases her at all. I would quite hapilly have another singleton, but you do have to put in extra time. Easy to do when there is only one to play with :-p

I've also recently had a bitch that reabsorbed a whole litter, so have both experiences :-( Still, at least I still have my bitch.
