Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Food suggestions for Siberian Husky
- By guest [gb] Date 11.10.01 17:46 UTC
My Siberian husky is on a chicken and rice canned diet issued by the vets that costs about £3.00 per day. Does anyone know of an equivalent diet that could be cheaper? He has to have this sort of bland diet. I have seen in the pet stores a food called Natural Diet - does anyone know if this is OK? or please can any breeder recommend a food that could be sufficent

Thanks

I wonder if you mean "Nature Diet"?

I often give my Belgian pup who is now just over 5 months the puppy version and she adores it, seems like good stuff.

I believe they have a fairly comprehensive wevbsite, but not sure of the addy, I believe a lot of the food is organic.

Have you considered Chappie :-)

Nature Diet is one of those foods that dogs love but it has an extremely high water content. You also need to be very careful that it has been stored in the correct conditions. If the packs are not completely flat to touch eg: no visible sign of air in them, then don't buy them.

My parents diabetic cocker spaniel was fed Chappie - she also had collitis (sp?) and numerous other complaints - and she thrived on it. She was on Chappie for 8yrs until she passed away aged 13 having had a massive stroke.

They alternated Chappie with actual chicken and rice at the suggestion of their vet, and when she got sick of that had pasta and chicken.

Chappie may have the reputation of being cheap but it really is good stuff - smells a bit odd though!!

i agree Chappie is great - i will probably put my pup on it when she's a bit bigger. My lot had super coats and looked fanstastic on it, it is a cheaper food but not one to be sniffed at!

A lot of complete foods are basted in fat which I have heard may have been frmo a dodgy source, ie from old restaurant fry-ups etc.

I understand Sibes need the correct amount of Zinc and this can sometimes be a problem for them, some foods do have this as a supplement.

My gsd has a funny tum, and can only eat Chappie,( tinned and Complete) both
are equally as efficent, she is 11 and a half and has a lovely coat, and is as fit as a lop.

why not give your dogs breeder a ring? She may have some ideas & will know all about feeding big dogs of your rather specialist breed

hi,
why not give "nutro choice" a try? their chicken and rice only contains chicken and rice no cheap byproducts or fillers so is good for sensitive tummies. i have 2 sibes and know a lot of people who have nutro with lots of success. i would stick to a premium food to make sure your dog is getting the best nutrition.
