Can anyone give me some advice please?
My one year old Shih Tzu bitch has been acting strangely since being clipped last Thursday.
I have fully checked her over and she has no cuts or grazes and her skin is not reddened at all.
She does not want to go outside to toilet and has messed in the house instead, she has refused to walk on the lead when previously she has been good on walks, she won't come when she is called, she just sits and watches the other dogs playing and won't join in and keeps trying to bite her tail.
She is eating and drinking normally, and does not have a high temperature.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Is this the first time she has been clipped? Has a lot of fur been clipped off? It may well just feel really weird, and also she may be cold.

It sounds like something around her back end might be bothering her, and perhaps it might be best for a trip to the vets. She also sounds traumatised by something.
Has she been clipped before? Does she know the groomer? Perhaps speak to her and ask if anything happened whilst she was being groomed.
IME most dogs absolutely hate going to the groomers...the last time i took my 2 girls they stood there shaking as soon as we arrived & i found it extremely distressing leaving them. I have since learned to groom them myself. My previous groomer, much to my horror & disgust told me she hit one of my girls. This shocked me to the core & i now shudder to think what actually happens that we don't know about. I'm not suggesting by any means that all groomers would do this though.

Not my experience at all. All my grooming dogs would drag their owners into my parlour. But then I only trimmed dogs whose owners were prepared to bring them in every 8 weeks and so they were used to grooming, my system and it was never a traumatic experience. :)
Yes this is the first time she has been clipped, the groomer said she was well behaved and had no problems clipping her.
I have noticed some areas where her fur looks shorter, like a square shape as if the clippers cut closer in places, but they are not red or sore.
She has had a lot of fur clipped off.
Could it be that she just feels strange?
I think that she probably does feel strange. I keep afghans and generally in the afghan community we clip off the oldies to spare them the repetetive bathing regime. They get used to it but when first done it feels really weird to them. They particularly can feel cold. you might want to get a little coat for your girl whilst the weather is so chilly.
I would think she is cold and feeling a bit sorry for herself .
She will find her own tail is irritating her , very typical in a short clipped Shih Tzu as the tail touches their back . She will get used to the feeling and it will be less sensible as the coat grows back .
Make sure she is not cold as a full clip leaves them rather exposed .
Athough I am no friend of doggy cloth , this may well be best until the weather gets warmer and/ or the coat has grown back .

oh dear!!
especially at cheekychow's post.im sorry but id definatly know that it wasnt my dog well before a year.i can tell you.
i would give your dog a bath with a very mild warm water soft on her skin and a baby mild shampoo but be careful in case of any broken skin.
dry her mostly with a towel and give her a gentel warm blow dry.leave her slightly damp.
if this doesnt make her feel better get your pup down to the vets.she may be having a reaction to the shampoo used.
nothing bad but she may have sensitive skin and its at the base of the tail where the skin is more likely itchy or upsetting. i always use a mild shampoo on a first time dog BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW.it could also be a number of other things like someone has tried emptying her anal glands whos not properly experienced or happy doing the job(i know no one is over joyed at it but you know what i mean lol),and its agrovating her.
i cant see that shes acting like this because the cut is different most dogs i know are pleased to get rid of the heavy coat.BUT AGAIN YOU NEVER KNOW.
it could be clipper burn thats started the agrovation and now its healed(sounds worse than it is) its still a bit sore.
i hope she feels better soon.

if she is still unhappy now I would get your vet to check her over.
Just to say she did settle down. It was her tail touching her back she disliked so much; she sat down when it touched her back!
She is fine now!
So glad she is feeling better in herself ...
the first clipp is a rather big deal ....
wish you all the best with your little darling , nice to see an update on how she is doing
We had a Shih Tzu at work who got a clip...she did the same thing...and like yours it was her tail tickling her back....:-) we gave the tail a tidy as well then and no more funny business..:-)

Whoops! I did once see a lady in our park nearly take the wrong Goldie home, but luckily the other owner realised it! I've had identical Westies in myself but luckily with the same owner, or I would have to be VERY careful.... :-p
Glad your girl is feeling happier now anyway. :-)
