ok due to the rotten weather today i had a clear out of all my books and old clothes and came across my dogs hand written pedigrees, and decided to give em a good going over on the net ...cutting my rubbish reason im writing this i find genetics fasinating.with the rotts its pretty simple but i have a poodle as well NOW THAT is good reading.
called the kc to speak to them about my dogs parents colours ect but theyre shut so i called her breeder great lot of help she was but she told me some colours.

im fasinated i wonder if i could tell what genes my girl carrys just by knowing the colours of her parents and grandparents.i cant work it out i dont think it is possible....is it.how could i know the genes she carrys if i only know the colours.

bare with me im still learning.loland this stuff is tough, but im nosey and i like learning about all this doggy stuff.oh thinks ive gone mad lol.

is it possible to see what she carrys by knowing her 3 gen ped colours???

he he sorry guys im on one...

You can do test on colour genetics on the KC web site Pedigree dog health i think it is. While the trial is labradors you could mentally substitute your own colours....

If you know the mode of inheritance of each  colour found in the pedigree ie dom, co dom, or recessive you can work out the % for each colour for each generation to give you an overall % of your dog carrying colours.  We use this methodology regularly with royal pythons who have a huge number of morphs we can work with giving some very interesting and stunning results, but you do need to know how the morph is transmitted.  Recessive traits can be the most difficult to figure out its fine if you've got a visual to a normal as that will give you 100% het for recessive trait but if you put back to normal/dom or co-dom the next generation then you've reduced it to a 1 in 4 chance for each puppy to  have a copy of the gene - until they produce with another visual or even carrier you won't know unless you test.

You can get coat colour testing done via VetGen USA, we sent DNA samples for schips  a few yrs back which gave them the charts for our breed but its certainly moved forward since then. Here's the link to the poodle testing chart might help you work out the potential for your's

Have fun lol.
