Topic Dog Boards / General / eyelid swollen

My dog Dozer caught his eyelid on a puppy cage :( (one of those cage's that have no bottom or top they fold together) Don't know if that makes any sense. He pushed the cage in with his face and it folded and he caught his eyelid on the hook part of the cage (the little hooks that hold the cage together). I just looked it up its one of those puppy playpens that fold flat for easy storage. He never caught it on the hook that you use to keep it together once it's folded, but on the hook that keeps the whole cage together (hope that makes sense). He caught his eyelid and really hooked it good, it pierced his eyelid. His eye seems to be fine and his lid was swollen really big, it has gone down not as swollen now. We put a warm cloth on it and polysporin for eye's now doing it 4 times a day. (it happened lastnight). Rather than that it seems to be o.k. Is there anything else I should do for him? Anyone else that may use those cages please be careful with them, unless this was just a freak accident. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thankyou. The eyelid did bleed a little.

Think it is a freak accident. But as it is his eye or near his eye I think it should be looked at by a vet. They will need to check the eye ball and make sure that no infection starts up in the eye lid.

Hi, I agree with jackie, I would take him to the vet - I know its a bit different, but one of my sons, scratched his eye on something really silly (his toybox) and the lid looked swollen but looked ok but until I had a good look and got him to look all around (move his eyeball about) I didn't notice that he had damaged the membrane around the eyeball, it looked torn and bloody - I took him straight to A & E and the doc there said he was lucky he didn't damage his eyeball and that the membrane was cut and he had to have drops in case of infection - always have it checked out - Sharon is the best one to answer your query - hopefully she will be on soon! Got back from the vets, pups, mom and Dozer, almost 2 hrs later. Dr. said to keep putting the polysporin on the eye like we are. So far so good, he does not need stitches. Now thats a relief. She said if there is any change at all to call and bring him in, but said that he looks good. So we are all relieved. His eyelid is still red and swollen a little, but should go down in a couple of days. He looks like Rocky after a bad fight, my poor pup. But rather than that it's not bugging him, still a little sore.
