following on from another thread, can anyone recommend where to get hip scores in Somerset? I just presumed our regular vet would do it? also is it ok to just visit somebody different for hip scores- or would you need to change vets altogether?
thanks
Emma

Any vet can take the x-rays, but many find that a vet that has experience of doing a lot of them dos a better job of getting good plates and the results are a few points better.

Also some of these vets are orthopaedic specialists, or use sedation, and this often results in a more competitive price.

For example I paid just over £125 plus £20 for fuel, to get Inka's done this year compared to over £170 at my local vets for her mother in 2005.

For these reasons two of my friends in Somerset also used the Hereford Vet I used.

Just outside of Somerset is Southfield vets in Dorchester, i'm in South Somerset and this vets is only 30/40 mins from me and I can highly recommend them.

Any ideas on cost as I have a Friend near Minehead with a 12 month old bitch that will need scoring soon.

Hi, I'm in North Somerset and I travelled to Dorchester also.

Next time around I might go to Yorkshire to visit one recommended by my breeder - a 430 mile round trip!

You can use any vet you like and this is one thing that's well worth travelling for.

Im suprised how low some of these prices are, I was quoted £260!

Surely that was for elbows too! If not that's very pricey.

no, elbows would be £90 on top!

Oh dear dilemma199 - if this is your usual vet I might be a bit tempted to check their other prices.  That seems high even for an xray with aneasthetic when done for surgery...

My bitch was scored for hips and elbows Oct 09 and if I remember rightly the charge to the vets was £145 then £75'ish to the BVA.

Hip scored last Friday under sedation £109.80 inc BVA fee

Wow - that's good. Whereabouts was that?

I had Chablis done (Hips and elbows) in Feb at my vets £185 plus the BVA charge. It was sedation rather tham a GA and not forgetting the bigger the dog the higher the cost (More drugs needed !) I was happy with that and she did a great job. Also at my vets I assist ( They gave up trying to throw me out years ago LOL) so never have to leave her there.
