Topic Dog Boards / General / Kennels or house sitters

My daughter is getting married abroad at the end of May. I had arranged care for my 3 dogs but at last minute I have been let down. I don't really want to put them in kennels as they have only been once before and my cairn had a bad reaction to the kennel cough vaccine but it may be my only option. Have thought about using one of the companies that provide someone to stay in your house and look after the dogs, just wondered if anyone had used them before? What would be your preference kennels or house sitter? I live in Nuneaton in Warwickshire if anyone has any recommendations as I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown!!!! :)

What would be your preference kennels or house sitter?
I would favour a house sitter from an established and experienced company.  I would never trust a well meaning friend or a 'one man band' to take care of my dogs more than letting them in the garden.
Apart from that, then I would use a safe, secure kennel with knowledgable owners who work hands on or don't just employ cheap labour.  Unfortunately that type of kennels are few and far between. :(

I always get a really trustworthy mate to stay at my house, rather than use kennels.  My second choice would be to use a house sitter, but wouldn't know who to recommend.

Hope you get sorted.

In the past I've used Minders Keepers and was very happy with them.

Good kennels may be booked up for the end of May already now ( we booked up a couple of weeks ago ) so if you do decide on kennels make sure its one thats highly recommended to you - if possible! :)

Some kennels have the dogs stay in their own homes and are treated as one of the family for their stay.

This is what we do for our two its so close to home about 400yards and they go on familier walks they have been from about 3 months to now, they are three, for odd days if we were out more than 4 hours to two week holidays. Id recommend them if you can find a good one.

I've used http://www.barkingmad.uk.com/a few times, very successfully. They have host families so the dogs go and stay in their home. I've also taken dogs in, in the past, as a Barking Mad host. I've found it has worked very well. Slightly more expensive than kennels but something I've been happier about. Not used anyone to house sit my dogs ... god, the cleaning beforehand!!  But there are a number of organisations, I think Animal Aunts is one, but never used so can't recommend.
Might be worth checking at your vet if anyone has recommendations if going the house/dog sitter route.

House sitters every time for me - keeps the house lived in at the same time which these days is a good thing. I am fortunate in that I have always been able to find a friend/relative to do it and its worked out brilliantly.
