Not sure if I should put this in this section but nevermind.

My grandad is to get a puppy and his son in laws (ppl I don't know or have ever met) has sired a litter of pups. Not sure if it was accidental or not. Dad jrt mum shih tzu. My bday weekend next weekend and he told me he may have to give it a miss because he's picking this pup up! Not that I would care otherwise but the pup is only going to be 5 weeks old. His son In law doesn't own the dam so doesn't really have any influence in anything to do with he litter. Ever since I knew about this litter before they were even born I knew it would be trouble. My vets won't jab before 8 weeks the pup will only just be weaned and I have serious doubts to if they will even be wormed or healthy for that fact.

He has his heart set on this little pup so I don't want him to not get it. But I don't want him with a sickly teeny tiny pup who will not have much social skills being taken from it's mum and litter mates at such a young age. My mum said she was going to have words but I don't think it will make much difference. What can I do and what would be the best care for a 5 week old pup. How small will it actually be?

Do you live near your Grandad Louise?

Your Grandad needs to decline taking this pup at 5 weeks, that is absolutely in his power to do, the pup should not leave until at least 7 weeks. I personally would not care what excuse the 'breeder' gives, if he wants this pup you or your mum must tell him for the sake of the pup to not take it yet, if he does he is as much to blame. No one can say how big the pup will be, it is obviously going to be small.

If you live near him why not look up a Parsons JR or Shitz breeder or other small breed and take your Grandad to view a litter from a breeder who firstly understands how to breed and care for the pups, will have health screened the Dam and Sire and give a lifetime of support to your Grandad.

People don't listen, you have to literally drag them to do good sometimes, I've done this twice with friends, turned up and dragged them out to see a good litter, believe me once they see the difference they always go for the good breeder, but you have to show them, because once they see a pup of any breed or cross they fall for it, you have to show them the difference in how they are reared and cared for.

Please stop him from either having the pup from this have a go breeder all together but at the very least stop him from receiving it at 5 weeks, the poor babe.

We dnt live in the same town so I haven't been to see it. My mum says it's happy and hungry plays all the time and has told him to get to the vet 2mro.

I had thoughts of washing my hands of the situation as noone has listened or took much notice of what I've said! When I think back to my own pups who would only drink goats milk until they were 6 weeks and still drinking from mum. The lack of social skills it will have, not to mention if it was sick my mums elderly dogs health.

Makes me sick to the stomach and I'll be telling my grandad to tell the sires owner to get the snip for his dog. My vets may even refuse to treat it as it's so young. To think someone of my own blood can be so stupid with a dog!

  I guess there is no point in giving advice then, what is done is done. Your Grandad is old enough to know his own mind, he probably won't take advice from you.

But, if he will...............A vet will see the pup regardless of age, not an issue, it's just too young for innocultions, but the vet will give worm treatment and flea spray can be used still, try to get your grandad to have the pup wormed with a vet wormer not shop bought, worms are very dangerous for a wee pup and get passed on from the dams milk at that age, so worming is essential at least.

You could try asking him to top up any foods with pasturised goats milk too, bless the wee pup. Your grandad is very naughty to have gone along with this, but he's your grandad, so good luck.

I think it's also a generation thing. I know that my Dad, who's in his 70's, has a completely different attitude to mine concerning his dog.He doesn't ill treat him but Dad doesn't seem to be that worried about worming, flea treatment etc. He is completely against castration, says the dog wouldn't be able to find his way home?? Have never been able to work out that one!

Your Grandad probably thinks you're making a mountain out of a molehill.I know my Dad would think that way. It's a very delicate situation to deal with. Just be thankful that it's a small dog, it could be one as big as yours.
