I have an 11 month old Russian Toy female. She's 1.6kg (3.5 pounds).

Lately she has been folding her front paws (forefeet) back when she's sitting.  Usually just the right one, but sometimes both.  It seems to be getting worse.

When she was 6 months old we had a scare with her.  She got very weak apparently and had trouble standing.  When we'd hold her, she'd hold one of her back legs out at a weird position.  Similar to what I've heard called as 'posturing' in humans with neurological conditions.

The vet was stumped and put her on some anti-biotics and steroids for a few weeks.  And it pretty much resolved.  He kind of hemmed and hawed and we all kind of attributed it to a temporary auto-immune neurologic disorder, perhaps set off by a viral infection or some such.

But now in the past month, this weird way of folding her right front paw and sometimes both folded back is becoming more pronounced.  It doesn't seem to be painful to her but we can't be sure.

She does seem to walk and run and play ok, with a normal gait.  Only becomes apparent when she sits down.

Can anyone offer us some insight into her condition?  Thank you.

Ooh no not had it but would worry as you've already said that it could be something neurological.

Not too sure what you mean about folding her front paws back as both my dogs seem to bend their front paws from the wrist ehen they sit down, which I have always thought normal.

Holding the leg out at a funny angle could be a luxating patella - which can be massaged back into place or sometimes just pops back itself but would need a referral to a specialist to diagnose if this is the problem.

I'm a little surprised that your vet prescribed antibiotics and steroids for something he wasn't sure about without doing tests or referring your dog for a second opinion and this is what I would be insisting for now.

Mine too!  Both my Bearded Collies do it.
