I was wondering if anyone has/uses the kennel club breed system, I have been toying with the idea of buying it but after having priced it out it seems like an awful lot of money (£500) for my breed which is English Springer Spaniels (working), I would like to know if anyone uses this system and if they feel it is value for money ??
Thanks
Nicola

Hi Nicola,
This will be one of my first buys when I win my millions on the Lottery (laugh!) - I would LOVE to have it and save myself the time of sifting through years worth of copies of the BRS, but I think the cost is totally unreasonable.
My interest is in two Band E breeds, and the cost would be extortionate.

O.k curiosity has got the better of me and I'm gonna have to ask, what is the Kennel Club Breed system?

Basically the Kennel Club breed records on computer, updated regularly as with the Breed Record Supplements. With a computer version, easier to do searches on specific dogs, progeny registered to a dog, etc.

Do you get unlimited updates with it or do you have to renew a licence each year? Sounds a super system but £500 seems extortionate - but then the KC are expert at that anyway;)

Oh, licensed updates of course. Have a look here for info

Tried to be clever here and do a link, but in case it doesn't work!! ..... http://www.peds.co.uk/kcbs.htm

Good grief - it worked!! Well, that's something I've learnt today.

Yey - well done you.
It would cost me £630
Must admit I was not that impressed with it as a pedigree programme compared to BM and some of the data !!!!!! There are apparently a couple of champions in my breed that aren't even Dobermanns! The only real benefit as far as I was concerned was that it saved me a few years of copying from the BRS. I don't get the updates to it as the BRS has a lot more information (health, owners etc) and at least I inow the information I am entering is compatable with what went before. I found few foreign dogs with the correct spellings - especially when it came to parents etc

The file can be imported into BM Christine, A friend of mine imported it into her Golden database. I must say that like you, I find the Breedmate way of doing things so much better than the KC's

Thanks very much everyone for your input on this, by the sounds of things I will have to keep updating my files from the BRS's as it doesn't sound like the KC Breed System is going to be worths it's money, unliess like Marina I winn the lottery :) does anyone have a list of what BRS back issues are available from the KC I have emailed them but yet to get a response everytime I phone up for one they tell me it's out of stock,
Best regards
Nicola
Hi Nicola
I think the KC will photocopy the pages of your breed from the BRS but I think when I was was searching it was around 20p per page plus VAT and there are 1000's of Dobermann pages.
If you advertise (or write a letter) in the dog press asking for pages from old copies or see if your breed already has an archivist then you may get them that way.
Have you checked BM's data swopper page as some people advertise that they will exchange their databases etc and it could be that other pedigree groups do this as well.

Agree Christine. I subcribed to it when it first came out, but its far too expensive, full of errors, usees a clunky old database format and has a silly interface. Customer support is lousy too. The second update I got came on a corrupted floppy. I didn't worry about that and entered the new records by hand, but when the next disk was also corrupted I complained. After being handed from pillar to post I got to the programmers who were totally unhelpful. So I chucked the thing in the bin and got Breedmate.
