Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hip Scoring in Boxers??
- By BoxingPhoebe [gb] Date 22.03.10 09:53 UTC
Hello

Has anyone ever come across having their Boxer 'Hip Scored'?  I was talking to someone who was asking for advise on getting a stud dog ......... She told me she was arranging all the tests Heart Test and Hip etc... Now I've never came across Boxers requiring a Hip Score test before.

Has anyone else?

Thank you

According to the Accredited breeder scheme, it's a recommendation that breeders hip score now...

Yes, hip-scoring is a sensible test for boxers - their BMS is 16 (in a range from 0 to 75) so there clearly can be problems with their hips.

That's a higher range than in my breed (highest 61), and also a higher average score, and our breed club requires all breeding stock to be Hip Scored.

Nothing to be complacent about in the Boxers results re hips.

My breed's BMS is just 9 and for us it is also a breed club requirement to hip score breeding dogs and bitches.

BMS in our breed is around the 16 mark and our scores have been between 4 and 42.  We also have to hipscore all of our breeding stock.

It may be recommended , but how many breeders actually do it

Sadly it is not considered  necessary in the breed (here in the UK)

Something I disagree with by the way... how many Boxer folk on here know  of breeders who do!!  Not many would be my guess.

I don't know of any that do it, the only Boxer's that I know of that are hip scored are one's that get imported over.

Think I may just get my boy done out of curiosity, he doesn't appear to have any obvious problems & those that comment on him say his movement is his best atribute. He's not at stud by the way, thats why he's not been done before.

I must say I am shocked that more Boxer breeders do not hip score bearing in mind that the breed rage is nothing to be complacent about and that US data http://www.offa.org/hipstatbreed.html shows 4878 examined of which 3.4% were excellent (less than a total score of 6 BVA system), and 11.1% scored in the Dysplastic range (over 25 UK system).

My own breed has twice as many excellent scoring animals, but also some more at the other end too, but interestingly none in UK score as high as the highest Boxer scores.

All ethical KC using breeders have Hip Scored all breeding stock for the last 20 years.

They're unlikely to be among the 393 that have been scored under the KC/BVA scheme - after all, why score twice?

One of my dogs has been scored twice JG and the results were totally opposite from each other! Many others in our breed have scored their dogs over here once imported also.

I'd be reluctant to put a dog under an unnecessary extra GA, but I can understand that some owners would want a score under the UK system for comparison purposes.
