hi, i've just returned home from the vets with my alaskan malamute puppy Belle, she's 14 weeks old.
this morning when i opened the door of her crate she was so excited to see me that she tripped as she stepped out and fell, hurting her right foot. i took her to the vet as she wasnt putting any weight on her right leg and it was clearly hurting her. she's been very quiet and only getting up to toilet or eat/drink.
the vet examined her and thinks she hes a broken toe, she's had a painkiller injection and is booked in provisionally for an x-ray in the morning. since returning home the painkiller seems to be working as she's putting more weight on it, seems more comfortable and has even tried to play with my little frenchie.(she's resting now)
i was wondering if any of you have experienced the same with your dogs and what the treatment typically is for a broken toe? i would appriciate any advice, thank-you.

I'd be inclined to ask the vet before x-ray what the treatment will be if the toe is broken, and what will be if just badly bruised.
my nans cat was accidently trodden on couple of years ago and the vet booked him for x-ray next day ... i got her to ask same what treatment will be and she was told treatment for broken toe would be rest and pain meds, treatment for badly bruised would be rest and pain meds.... x-ray seemed a bit pointless then!
and myself i had suspected broken toe last year-was aganising- dr said no point in x-raying as again treatment identical for broken or bruised providing it still in straight line

i have had one dog with a suspected broken toe and a friend has also , both vets didnt actually xray and recommeded rest and pain killers as the other poster said , there is nothing they can do anyway so why go thru the trauma of sedation/ga
hope she feels better soon , they soon recover and are back to normal in no time

I had a retriever with a broken toe after my horse trod on her many years back.
I was told to just let it heal its self with rest,she had no xray then, and she was fine after with no limp.

Hope your pup soon recovers and its not to serious.

My younger dog broke her toe badly. Her leg was bandaged for about six weeks (bandage changed weekly) which had serious consequences :(

I had a 13 week old pup years ago with a broken leg. Unfortunately her growth plates closed and left her with a slightly shortened hock. However, the main probelms seemed to be from the plaster, loss of fur and her foot has never quite been the same, they can get a sort of fungal infection if enclosed in plaster and so if they suggest leaving it to heal naturally I would go for that. When a human has a broken toe, they normally only have it strapped to next toe if indeed they do even that.

just an update on Belle.
thanks to everyone for your advice. i asked the vet this morning what treatment would be given if her toe is broken and they said she would need a splint on for up to 4 weeks and painkillers. we decided to have it x-rayed as she was in a lot of pain and the vets were concerned that if it didn't heal correctly it could lead to further complications. when i collected her i was shown the x-ray and her 3rd toe was clearly broken, poor little soul! she now has a splint & bandage on and is on painkillers once a day. she also has to rest as much as possible(easier said than done!!!) she's much happier since coming home and we are pleased to have her back.

Glad to hear Belle is more comfortable. I had a cat a few years ago that came home with a severe limp one day, xrays revealed he had broken all four toes, god knows what happened but he had a splint for 6 weeks and healed very well though his foot was never completely the right shape again but he did break all his toes. He never had any problems with it after he had healed though sadly we lost him to an rta 4 days before xmas.

Hope Belle continues to improve and you manage to keep her rested....good luck on that one!
