I've been reading alot about co-ownership on here and I am wondering how that works in reality? What if the two parties fall out with each other? How does that work then and who gets the dog..?

Mmmm nice one otterhound.  Half a dog each?  Have to be honest I wouldn't consider sharing a dog.  Might split my jam doughnut with you.  But not my dog.  :-)

You need to have it in writing, and if you fall out I'd imagine one person would have to buy the other out. Needless to say the dog will have to live with just ONE person so that would be the obvious person to keep it -and it won't really be a PET for more than one person. Also in law even if a dog is registered in one person's name, the person who can show vet bills for it and similar items will always have the greater claim, as they have lived with it and looked after it.

Thanks Marianne, I didn't know that.  It's fair to say then, nobody can take my dogs off me!  Have loads of paid vet bills to prove they're mine!  :-)

Haha me too!! No one else can stake a claim on my lot not even my OH if anything ever happened as all vet bill are in my name and I must own shares in the vet practice by now!!!

I did have a dog in partnership with her breeder and that worked ok but we were also very good friends. Can imagine it being a total nightmare if you fall out though. She was a bitch that I loved and the breeder also liked but had already kept a bitch from the litter so we had her here and showed her from here. You do hear alot of horror stories though. Not sure that I would do it again just because of the problems that could occur.

I have one in co-ownership, it has worked out fine. He is basically my dog in all but name and his co-owners have been a big help with stuff like trimming and what judges to go under, also helping out with matings.  The biggest pain is show entries if I want to enter my other dog as NFC at a breed show or enter them both in an agility show i need two forms as they are in different ownership.

you have to mke a watertight contract before you sell or get involved. i have co ownership of a hound i bred simply because the cost of sending the hound to asutralia was very high for the potential owner, but the situation there was getting desperate in the need for new blood lines. Therefore I was happy to come to an arrangement and be a co owner. In reality she lives  full time with her other owner and in reality Im going to be lucky if I see her once or twice more in her lifetime :( b the arrangement works well for us.

Co-ownership is not a good idea, it will always end up with both sets of owners falling out over something!!

I must admit its something Ive considered because I would love to have a good dog to show and Id do the looking after if the other owner would show? neve likely to be in that situation but I think when Im a wee bit older I would foster rescue dogs if I can. But Im not sure if I could let them go.  But I know OH will not have loads of dogs around the place but I still look at puppies and rescue sites and cry!! Im too soft for my own good.

Blimy you are nearly there Ive got about 14lbs and Im there but its so hard the nearer I get.

I did it once, all in writing in a contract thansk goodness BUT my advice would be DONT do it.................I would never do it again.

We have quite a few in co-ownership, some the breeder has bred and some we have bred, (all live with us) never had any problems we are also best friends. Yes i have heard many nightmare stories about partnerships going wrong.
