Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Large Pedigree Lab seeks Mate

Please could someone point me in the right direction to find a mate for "Pax".

He is a very large black lab, who has a pedigree, although no paperwork as he was rehomed when he was young. He has no bone/muscle problems (e.g. X-rays on hips fine).

He is seven years old, strong, athletic, obedient, has a great temperament and is a good gun dog. He is also very good with children (including young babies!).

We are looking for a large female Lab to mate him with.

Any suggestions as to how best to find a suitable mate for him gratefully received.

Thank you!

To be quite honest guest, I would not breed a dog that had no papers :(

I had a husky from a puppy farm, the most beautiful dog you had ever seen, big blue eyes, great temp great with the othr pups, kids etc. But I have recently had him neuterd as he has no papers and with out them I do not think he should be bred with as I can not trace his background etc Like I would be able to if he was KC reg. Personally I would enjoy your dog for what he is- your pet :)

He has a pedigree? Hate to tell you this but even a mongrel has a pedigree...it is merely the names of parents & grand parents etc etc. For all you know, the name written downas his grandfather might not even be a labrador, if he has no KC papers!!!! (I have seen it happen before!) I think you need to do a bit more research into his lines/breeding history/health history before you consider breeding from him.

If you have a detailed pedigree, as in you know the sire and dams kennel club names and grandparents etc, can you not contact the Kennel Club to see if you can register him, I know if you register after a certain age (is it 12 months or 6 months old?) you pay a higher fee , something like £60.00. I could be wrong, but may be worth looking into with the kennel club. You will then be absolutely sure of his line and breeding. Isn't he a bit old to be used at stud for the first time? Julie:)

Has Pax done any showing etc etc, to show he is worthy of the breed standerd

Julie you are right, it is £60 to reg a dog at the KC club after the age of 12 months (I think its that age) :)

You can register a dog late - but only the breeder can do it. They have to sign the form and have the stud dog owners signature as well to authenticate the pedigree. So unless the breeder is known and willing to do it - then you can't register.

7 is also on the old side to stud for the first time. Without papers and a proven hostory - no-one is liekly to pay you for his "services". You have no idea if he would perform. If you are determined to mate him then you are unilkely to find a reputable breeder would use him but you might find someone else with a pet lab bitch who would be willing. Please do be aware though of all the potential pitfalls that this road could lead to. Lab's are a numercially large breed with lots coming up for rescue. As you said already - He was a rehome. Using your dog at stud brings loads of responsibilities if you plan to do it right and admit your responsibilities. You may be needed to rehome one of the puppies at a later date. Most people know of the risks that pregancy presents for a bitch - but mating is also not without risks for the dog - especially if you are inexperienced.
