Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch reluctant to mate
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 20.03.10 19:52 UTC
Bitch has been ovulation tested and due to be mated today and Monday.  When stud tried to mount her she got quite aggressive even though she was flagging her tail etc.  She is never aggressive but doesn't like any dog sniffing her rear end even when not in season.
Could she still be a little too early or just a bitch that just doesn't want to be mated!
She isn't one of my girls so I don't know her at all well - how far could/should you go to ensure you get mating.  She was taken to another stud last season and believe they had a very quick slip mating and obviously no puppies.
Any help/advice etc I can pass on would be much appreciated as they are so keen to have a litter and keep a pup.
Yes, she's had hips scored and eyes tested.

Some bitches just do not want to be mated. It may be that she is incredibly dominant and won't allow to mount. If she needs to be forced to mate, then she shouldn't be made to. There is always some reason for her not wanting to. I don't think its a case of her "not knowing" as she has already had a mating. Personally if she was getting as stressed as she sounds, then I would think it isn't worth it. :-(

If a bitch is being aggresive to the stud, it should not happen. She should not be mated if being aggressive to the dog.

There's a difference between true aggression and a scared bitch losing her nerve at the last minute.

I know but if she is aggressive to the male it SHOULD NOT happen!!!

To be fair, nobody should have to "ensure" a mating.  This topic has been covered so many times already, and one or two CD'ers have witnessed what was tantamount to rape.

If she isn't ready, no point in forcing the issue.  You could end up with a very traumatised bitch.  You may find that Monday has her acting like a hussy, and only too willing.

Go with what the bitch wants.  If the stud dog isn't extremely experienced, remember that he is going to mount her, ready or not.  Flagging is really no indication, whatever the books say.  I have one total tart here that flags from day 3.

And I know of one CD'er that admits to having a complete trollop that flags when she isn't in season.  :-)

I would try her Monday and probably up to Wednesday, and, if it doesn't happen, accept that she would not have been very maternal, and you would have regretted even trying.

Some bitches, if forced to mate, don't take anyway.

I think this is more the case - she snapped once as he tried to enter her.  But not really as though she meant it, I believe going by what I''ve been told of the events.

Thanks JeanSW - I had searched for previous postings but didn't show anything!

They're going back on Monday, and as you say, she may well act like a hussy, especially after visiting dog previously.  I aways think its quite a big ask of a bitch to travel some distance and then mate a strange dog sometimes with very little introduction etc.

Will also tell them to try up until Weds - just in case.... But if its not meant to be, its not, I think they are prepared to buy in a pup so not really a problem for them.

None of this is black and white!!

I took an experienced bitch for mating to a maiden dog - she gave him a 'look' and a " get off me you silly little boy" growl and he fled and hid :-)

I had to hot foot it up to another dog ( her first hubby) and she gave him the 'look'....he said " Whatever" and mated her.

This does not constitute an agressive bitch and of course she is of an ideal temperament or I would never had bred from her.

She has an opinion - and I listened to it!

I have recently had a bitch came to one of my studs. She had had bloods done and they were told she needed mating that day (day 19). As soon as she set eyes on my boy she went crazy! I have never seen anything like it!!!

I told them I would not do a mating as there was no way she wanted mating, they took her away and brought her back for the next few days with the exact same response (I even tried my other dog). I know people that would of got a mating but I have experienced this (years ago) and my bitch never took so obviously she wasnt ready!!
I was also thinking of my dog as this would only be his third mating and I wouldnt want this bitch to put him off!

I agree that the bitch has an opinion, she either wants mating or doesnt! Unfortunately some bitches just dont.

Good luck

I have to say, my bitch was extremely difficult to get mated, she would definitely have gone for the dog had she not been controlled. She had several premate tests done and conceived a large litter, so I know we got it right.

Now I'm not saying any bitch should be "forced" but I now believe experienced people who tell me that some bitches would never be mated if it was down to them!! You see, my bitch lives with a castrated male who she has always been dominant over. They are very close indeed and have never ever squabbled, because my boy is so easy going he just "lets" her take the lead. My bitch is the most loving, lovely temperament, but she has just had a lot of practice in being the dominant one. I believe she just fits into this category.

Now we're looking into her next "husband" and I will choose an older, experienced stud. The one I have in mind will only mate if they are absolutley ready, which of course is what I want. We want a pup from this litter and she won't be bred from again. All the pups from her previous litter have fab temperaments.

I don't think it's a temperament issue any more, I think it's more of a personality thing, and the mating process means a bitch has to be dominated by the male, some bitches just will never accept that.

Difficult one I know!!!

I have a girl in season at the moment. 2 previous attemps failed, she wasn't aggresive towards the stud dog, she just plonked her rear end on the floor & barked at him. I'm now thinking I left it too late & perhaps she'd gone over. This time I'm thinking of the Ovulation test. I'm pretty sure she's almost ready. If we don't get a mating on this season, I'm going to give up. Maybe it's just not meant to be....

My girl just kept sagging at the knees last time, although ovulation tests had showed levels were rising so she should have been ready. Tried again 2 days later and it was the same. Maybe next time she will stand up properly!

And if those are mated, how do you know they don't have daughters that will act the same? Some animals just aren't meant to be bred from.

I also agree no bitch should be forced, but it doesn't neccessarily mean the bitch should never be bred from, we must remember we are putting them in an unnatural situation, it doesn't mean the bitch will never accept being mated, but a dominant bitch may resent being mounted by a stud WE chose and often will quite happily stand for the mutt of her choosing down the park, it's us who deem this unacceptable.
