Hi Jean, l had a slip mating once, (not me), but my dog TEE HEE, and it resulted in the bitch producing 15 - YES - 15 puppies.

Took my girl for a repeat mating had another slip mating for 5 mins last night. Stud dog owner is keeping her till thursday she thinks today is the correct day because she is getting that ripe smell & will be over on thursday. The stud dog is 10 years & very healthy with all the tests done all clear. So if she tries today what day do i class as day 1.as she will have had 3 matings over a 4 days.

In my breed I would not count a slip mating at all, but I know that slip matings are common in toy breeds where often the Male is smaller than the bitch, but having had it happen once I would have expected the stud owner to hold the pair in close contact.

Ties are more satisfactory as you know for sure the goods have been delivered, rather than with a  slip it's like the paperboy riding past on his bike and throwing the paper at the door (as in American films).

Also fertility in males starts to decline from 5 years onwards, not maybe enough to be much of a worry in natural matings with plenty of opportunity for delivery of useful amount of sperm, but does affect the viability for freezing for AI.

At 10 years old in my breed where males get little stud use I would be thinking myself lucky to get a litter, (though of course it's entirely possible), has this male recently produced puppies?

Yes Brainless they are a toy breed, he had a litter last year all healthy. he is still fertil was tested at vets. So it is wait and see it has never happened before.

I may be wrong, but I, personally would class this as a mating with 5 minute tie.  I call a slip mating where he enters her and comes straight back out.

Not really a slip mating is where the dog is thrusting in the bitch, and either gets off and there is no tie or when he tries to turn there is no tie and he pulls free.

The first part of a dogs ejaculate is usually just clearing the tubes and if collecting for AI would be discarded,

Next comes the semen rich fraction, delivered usually during the stair climbing stage.

Then during the tie prostatic fluid and probably a small amount of semen continues to be delivered.

The prostatic fluid acts as food for the sperm, and is full of energy.

With AI this is not usually taken if it is for freezing, and an artificial semen extender (for feeding the sperm) is added to feed the sperm after thawing.

Stud dog owner held them together while he pumped into her both times but they were not tied together Ells-Bells. Hopefully she will have got a tie today.

Hi my girl had 3slip  matings on wed & this morning they tied at last so when do i class as day 1 from the very first slip mating or from the tied mating.
- By minnie mouses [gb] Date 26.03.10 17:33 UTC
The slip matings were on days 11 13 & 14 the tie was on day 15 so perhaps day 15 was the day
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 27.03.10 08:18 UTC
My male stud dog on his first litter never acheived a tie on either of the 2 matings, but once he was in I did hold the 2 together for 15 mins just to make sure .... that was a back killer I can tell you ;-) but it did produce a litter of 10 puppies all healthy.  I wouldn't disregard those matings that didn't have a tie, but just be cautious when the time comes that it could possible have happened from the first mating.

Our girl was mated on Friday Sunday and Monday, no tie till Monday, she was scanned and they said she was 30 days, which means she took from the 1st mating :-)
