Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How to Convince Someone to Get the Mismate?
- By Tanya1989 [ru] Date 21.03.10 10:13 UTC
How do you convince your mother (not my mother but a friends) to get her beloved "Flossie" the mismate?
Bit of background: "Flossie" is a crossbreed, Lab x, and this is her first season. The randy boy is an untested lab: age unknown, both naturally un-neutered  . Yesterday "Flossies" human mum came down the stairs to find both dogs tied.

> my problem besides the fact that she has no idea what she's doing and just thinks it will be nice to have a litter is that not just last weekend she was trying to get me to have her as my mum and the dog aren't really very fond of each other and is driving my mum mad with her still not being house broken and constant barking. i really need some advice regarding lenght of pregnancy ect as i have no idea either and want to help my mum and the dog as much as i can, i would have said yes i'll have her if it wasn't for the fact im getting my puppy in 2 weeks and have an unfixed dog myself [will be soon] but i am seriously considering telling the breeder of my pup that i can't have him so i can take her in. what is the chance of her being pregnant? my mum said she saw them fixed yesterday. i am aware of the missmate jab but i already know she won't consider it and i really don't want to get into an argument with her about it. any help greatly recieved.

So how do you convince your mother of all people to get the mismate, without creating an argument, to the point where the mother is likely to go ahead to spite the daughter?

Long shot.  Couldn't you go down the route of the welfare act, and the bitch not being old enough for mating.  Depends how much they know whether you could infer that, if reported, they might get into trouble for not taking care of a baby in season.  (as in, they should have protected her?)

Perhaps not very ethical but is there any chance the daughter could get the bitch to the vet without the mother knowing?

Thats what I suggested, it turns out she lives miles from the vet and neither would be able to afford mismate or spaying, but she wants litter anyway

:( how sad and living miles away from the vets !! surly this should make her want to mismate not all whelping goes well ...silly woman shes asking for trouble

sorry, mis wote that lol, meant she lives miles from her mother, but can't afford mismate or spaying... but doesnt want it anyway

If she can't afford the mismate or spay, how will she cope with the costs involved in rearing a litter?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.10 11:17 UTC
The mismate injection wouldn't cost her more than about £40 for the two. If she can't afford that, she certainly can't afford to have a litter of puppies.
- By Tanya1989 [ru] Date 21.03.10 11:19 UTC
I get the feeling she will not spend anything to bring up the puppies in the correct way. My friend says she knows nothing about breeding at all... just that it will be a "nice" thing now the mating has happened

Then she'll need to be lied to and told that it's against the 'new' law (Animal WelfareAct, perhaps) and she could get into trouble.
- By Tanya1989 [ru] Date 21.03.10 11:28 UTC
Ok found out the cross... lab x goldie and dad is lab also.... I know nothing about these 2 breeds regarding health testing so what could we use from this?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.10 11:30 UTC
Hip scoring, elbow scoring and specialist eye tests.

That's the route that I was thinking.  If they know nothing about breeding dogs, I was hoping that it's unlikely that they know anything about laws covering them.

If its her first season i gather she is under 12 months old? Why dont you scare her with the TRUTH!! Shes a very young bitch, far too young to be bred, not physically or mentally mature to be bred. She may not be able to give birth naturally to the pups. So she would need a C-section, costing at least £600, the pups might die (not uncommon) how nice is that? As she isnt mentally mature she may have no instincts and she could eat/squash/kill the puppies or leave them and not want to have anything to do with them. She may die giving birth, with an idiot of an inexperienced owner. Someone without a clue cannot raise pups correctly. End result doom and gloom whatever way she looks at it. If she cant afford £40 as others have said hows she going to feed a litter of anything upto 14 is shes unlucky for 6 weeks??? worm them and everything else that goes along. Not to mention being up to her eyeballs in poo!

And this is one of the situations that glaringly highlights why those who protested at Crufts were targeting the wrong crowd and haven't fully understood the overwhelming reason why rescues are full to overflowing :-(

This litter can not go ahead, we have enough mixed breeds and pedigree dogs in dog homes.

Could you email / print this page of for your friends mum.
