- By Dianesdog [gb] Date 18.03.10 20:36 UTC
Has anybody done the above show in the past? Any pointers with regards to hotels enroute, routes etc?
Anything will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Does rather depend on what country LOL. We did it in 2008 in Sweden, took us 3 days to get there but was easy as I have all my friends and family in Sweden so didn't need hotels. Have decided to go next year when it's in Paris as it's so close.

Hoping to do it this year in Denmark.

Been to a couple, the only thing I would say about Herning is that the accommodation seems to be filling up very fast. Should be a good show.

Okay if you're planning to go this year, I'd avoid the ferry. It takes you straight to Denmark BUT the crossing takes 20 hours and you will have to keep the dog in your car or in one of their kennels ("kennels" usually means small cage -and they only have 5 per ferry) and there will be nowhere to go for a wee etc. Better then to take ferry to Holland, then drive through Holland and Germany into Denmark -that you can do in a day, but you need an extra day for the ferry crossing. The ferries from Harwich are quicker than those from Hull.

The Harwich to Denmark ferry does take 20 hrs and you have to leave the dog in the car, or use one of the tiny, cold and wet kennels on board.  As with the car the dog must be confined to the kennel for the whole journey.  Allowing for boarding and docking the total time is closer to 22 hours.   I have done this voyage but not with a dog but did find out about the whole procedure whilst on board.  The better ferry option is from Harwich to Hook of Holland and from there the journey time in driving hours is around 10 hours.  The roads are relatively good, dual carriageway mostly, can be congested around the Holland section, and through Bremen and Hamburg but once north of Hamburg the traffic clears out and it is not too bad. If there is major construction on the German section beware as at night they tend to reroute traffic off the dual carriageways at some parts for a mile or two and the signs are not easy to find the dual carriageway again. Saying the generally the signs are clear and easy to follow.  Howver never let your vehicle get low on petrol as the further north you get the less petrol stations you find, they are often a long, long way apart.  And sometimes, particularly in Denmark shut down quite early on.  Personally I take the Dover - Dunkerque route, the ferry terminal is 5 minutes off a great dual carriageway and though further south the Hook of Holland the mileage is just over 100 miles more, and the driving time to Herning about 1.5 hours more,  you do not have the congestion you can get in Holland (and the roadworks).  And the ferry crossing is 2 hours as opposed to 6.
There is a note on the show site that the removal of dew claws is forbidden in Denmark though they are allowing dogs who have had this procedure to enter. Quote from the site: - "Furthermore, according to Danish legislation removal of dewclaws with the purpose of changing the dog's appearance is forbidden. As legislation regarding docking/other surgical interventions varies from country to country, the judge must not when judging consider whether the dog has in accordance with the breed standard been docked or had its dewclaws removed."  Somewhat of a roundabout way of saying if the judge is used to seeing dew claws on a breed and we remove them in the UK he may consider is has been altered.

Sorry see there already is a thread about dew claws at the WS.

Thanks for the info, got my Danish hotel sorted, just a few more details to confirm and that'll be that.

eeeek...
I think I should start sorting everything out or we will be staying in a tent...
I have entered the dog but that is it so far.
By the way, if you shop at Tesco's club card vouchers(4x value) can be used with Stenaline.
I always save mine for the purpose of travelling to europe, stenaline or eurotunnel  :).

For some reason I thought it was in Spain next year.  But Paris as you say even closer!
