Topic Dog Boards / Health / Uncontrolled Urination

I have a dog who has, in the past week, started to have episodes of uncontrollable urination. He's been absolutely fine otherwise but on three separate occasions has just stood in the house and wet himself. It appears to be involuntary - he doesn't even try to cock his leg - and the amount of wee he produces in these episodes is excessive. The thing that concerns me is that he is still urinating normally otherwise and does not appear to have any problems weeing.

This same dog has been to the vets a lot recently as regards some involuntary leg spasms which happen irregularly but, when they do happen, are quite severe (he kicks a single back leg very hard for a short time). He's been x-rayed and there appear to be no physical deformities in his hips or spine, but the vets aren't willing to do any more unless I can video his leg spasm episodes for them to see. This will be hard since they happen irregularly and without warning.

I'm not sure whether the recent excessive urination is connected to the spasms. Anyone have any idea what might causes the urination, or whether it might be connected to his intermittent uncontrolled leg-kicking? I wil probably have to take him back to the vets again but since there is nothing for them to see, and my dog appears overall very healthy, I'm not sure what they can do.

I would definitly go back to the vet it does sound like there could be maybe a  connection maybe neurological ?.

My toy crossbreed  suffers if that the right word from leg spasms quite violent and sshakes her whole body at times similar to what you describe but only when laying down. My vet was baffled and unless we went through loads of testing wasn't sure what it is. In our case as it doesn't affect her any other way and doesn't distress her I am leaving alone at present. I find if I call her when it starts she gets up and all is well of course that wouldn't apply to the urination.
Hope you find the answer

> episodes of uncontrollable urination

Could be an infection. My last dog had cystitis and was weeing where he was standing - pools of wee constantly.

I would take the dog to the vets armed with a urine sample, the urination may or may not be related to the leg spasms but either way the vet will want to do a urine test to see if he can diagnose/rule out an ifection.

Please update and let us know how things are.

Thanks - I'll see if I can get a urine sample from him.

They may as well install a revolving door in the vets for us. My poor boy's not having much luck lately.

Could it be a slipped disk? I don't know if the leg spasms are typical of that and suspect it would have shown up on the x rays but the urinaton sounds very similar to my big boy who slipped a disk and like your boy just wet himself without cocking his leg and was out of control of it. His back legs didn't spasm but he lost control of them when he stretched his head down to the floor.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and ideas - they have been very useful.

My boy's had a busy week - he's visited a chiropractor and been back to the vets. The chiropractor believes his leg-spasms are due to him having sprained his ankle and afterwards kept getting his kneecap "locked", causing him to kick violently. I hope it's as simple as that! The chiropractor also felt that he was rather tense and hot above his kidneys, which would tie-in with a possible urination problem. So the day after this, my boy was back at the vets for a blood and urine test. The bloods came clear apart from one slightly high value for something to do with his liver - the vet said it was probably stress-related and nothing to worry about. His urine showed up with lots of crystals, however, and had a slightly high protein level, plus was very concentrated. The vet's decided to put him on Hill's s/d diet for a while to hopefully break down any crystals in his bladder and we'll see how we go from there...

(I'm going to have to start buying this s/d stuff online I think - it cost a fortune at the vets!)
