Topic Dog Boards / General / Great Danes Undershot Jaw?? Advice PLEASE!
- By sammygirl74 [gb] Date 14.03.10 10:56 UTC
Hi, Im new to this forum, just wanted a little un-biast advice, I have a Great Dane bitch, bought from reputable breeder and Im very very happy.  She was bought for pet and show. (my first time showing!!)  Her bite was perfect at 12 weeks and onwards, but in  the last 3 weeks (she is now 5 months old, ) her bottom jaw has started to overshoot the top.  Obviously she is teething, and her large upper canine fell out today!  I took her to the breeder who said give her time, her head is changing as she grows, wait and see.

I am happy with that advice, but am secretly worried of the odds of it getting better?  Would love to hear from anyone with experience of this especially in great danes or like breeds...

At the end of the day, she is my baby and im happy with her, but I have got the showing bug and was so looking forward to showing her, dont want to waste a lot of time and energy and money for that fact, ringcraft training her if in all likelyhood her undershot jaw will not get better.

Many thanks for any and all advice!!!!!

Its very frustrating I know - but you love the dog anyway, it seems that you will keep her whatever so keep on ringcraft and keep the faith!
If you have confidence in the breeder of your dog, listen to what they have to say. Taking the puppy to ringcraft also socialises, mentally stimulates and trains your dog so nothing lost...but the best thing about training this puppy for the showring will be the experience you will get and this will pay great rewards in the future.

Good luck and dont keep looking, wait and see, thats all you can do at the moment.

Hi

My friend has Bernese and one of her males she had bought to show went undershot when he teethed in....she was gutted but kept him and still went to ringcraft. Anyway at 6 months I went over him as she was practicing for a small local show and he had a perfect bite, I couldnt believe it as in my breed once the mouths have gone thats normally it!

Fingers crossed!!

My Labrador dog was the same, perfect bite until around 5 months then it went overshot. I was in a bit of a panic as bought him to breed and show and several people at ringcraft said it would stay like that. I am glad to say within a month or he proved them wrong and it went back to being a perfect scissor bite so try not to panic just yet.

It seems that often the jaws do not grow at the same rate but even out eventually. As they say patience is a virtue, posess it if you can......!

Ah, thanks for your advice all, sounds more hopeful than I feared!! I will keep on with the ringcraft and see what happens!!!!

A friend of mine rehomed a dog through breed rescue due to undershot jaw.  He came from an experienced show home, they just didn't have the room to keep him and bring in another prospect so he went to live with my friends - they took him for his initial vets visit and it was noted that he had an undershot jaw - two months later he had a perfect scissor bite!

I have a new pup, myself and the breeder were really excited about getting her in the showring, potential future breeding plans for her etc but at 4 months her mouth went.  Unfortunately in my breed when the bottom teeth go in front of the top you'd need a miracle to correct this.  And at 6 mths her mouth has not corrected and I don't think it ever will.  She will however now be my new obedience and working trials dog...so this opens up a new chapter for us.

Thats not uncommon and overshot can rectify itself but undershot I doubt will come good again.

Seldom in a woman.  NEVER in a man!!  :-)  :-)  :-)

Sorry, just had to complete the saying.

My Groenendael pup was undershot from 3 months - she's now 9 months and has a perfect deep scissor bite - the top and bottom jaws grow at different times and whilst it's true that in some breeds an undershot mouth never comes right that's not true for others- in my breed if the molars are correcly aligned then the teeth will usually come right -ears are another thing that play the 'hokey cokey ' ( up, down , in out etc) during teething  but generally sort themselves out - give him time and keep everything crossed !

Ditto Christine

I have never seen an undershot every come right.   Nothing to hold it back. When it is gone it us usually gone.    In fact level rarely holds.

If I had a level or undershot it would be written off for showing.

Well Sammygirl...that's because these things are often breed specific and, by the very nature of this forum, you will get opinions from breeders/owners of different breeds.

That is why I suggested that you ask your breeder.
