hope somebody can help me, ive heard that one of the puppies from my last litter isnt well, i went into breeding doing all right things all the right tests, all the puppies were vet checked before they went to their new homes, but now ive heard ones ill, it isnt producing enough bile,i think its got under developed liver and kidneys, i feel gutted they all seemed so well, and ive heard from all the others and they are fine, any advice what to do, someone said offer to take the puppy back but i know the lady that had her loves her to bits, so thats not an option, it feels like one of my own are ill.       

The same has recently happened to us, all puppies from litter fine except one, he became ill at about 16 weeks (left us at 8 weeks after being vet checked) and was then diagnosed with a liver shunt.  He is having surgery and though I know their insurance will cover costs, it has caused a lot of upset for his new owners who are very good, genuine people.  We were heartbroken, liver shunt is not something I'd ever heard of in our breed, no history of it in the bloodline and the puppy had been in perfect health for the first few months of life.  I made the decision to refund the purchase price without taking the puppy back as they are very attached and want to forge ahead with his treatment though I have said I would take him back at any time should they wish.  This was really a gesture of good faith and by no means was I obliged to give a refund but I couldn't help but put myself in their position.  I breed to hopefully better the breed, not to line my pockets and couldn't bear the thought of anybody thinking I'd profited from their heartache.

I'm not trying to advise you, just letting you know it happens sometimes to the most responsible breeders, with all the screening in the world things sometimes pop up even where there has been no history of it in a line. Don't beat yourself up over it.  I wouls say though that unless you are very close to the new owners, a signed veterinary letter detailing diagnosis and prognosis should be provided before you make any decisions. I agree, if they wish to keep puppy and will face treatment costs then a refund of the purchase price, would be the way to go, and the choice of ongoing costs would be theirs as you had no way of preventing or knowing a problem may occur and had health tested to the degree available/appropriate.
