Topic Dog Boards / Health / Rottie turning into a dalmation.......
- By Tadsy Date 10.03.10 20:03 UTC
........Ok not really a dalmation, more of a negative of a dal.

Not sure whether this should be in Health either as she's otherwise in fine fettle but couldn't quite work out where to put this.

About 3/4 months ago, my middle girl developed a white patch on her head, it's a line of about 1cm and at first I thought the OH had been painting the woodwork and hadn't told me, and that she'd leant on it. But on closer inspection it's hair and not paint. I can't recall that she had a wound there (my lot do play rough), so don't think it's a scar. She's now developed a further 12 or so patches on her back, in a sort of horseshoe shape (I'm thinking of re-naming her lucky), each patch is made up of around 10 hairs, so they're not large areas. But people are starting to comment.

Nothing has changed in her diet, exercise, change of detergents/cleaners etc, and she is absolutely fine in herself, but I wondered whether anyone had come across this before?

Her muzzle is still black, and she's only 3 so it's not a general ageing, the white hair is in the wrong place anyway. I'm not concerned enough to consult a vet. I've always had my suspicions that she's not a true rottie, her head is wrong - she almost looks like a rottie that's had a head transplant, although this may also be due to the fact we had her spayed at 6 months, (on the vets advice).

So I shall cut my waffling short, but would be interested to hear any similar stories, or general thoughts as to the underlying cause.

Thanks

T

Done a quick Google and vitiligo seemed to come up quiet a lot.

Found these wesbites:

http://www.professorshouse.com/pets/dogs/why-is-dogs-nose-turning-pink.aspx

http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/vitiligo.aspx

and also a post on another dog forum where someone has a Rottie that their vet as described as a "reverse dalmation". Will have to PM you the link as think it is against TOS to link to another forum.

A few pictures here and here.

If you Google vitiligo rottweiler, quite a lot comes up.

Thanks for this, I've had a look at the links and they all seem to refer to loss of pigment in the nose, nails etc as being the primary identifier for Vitiligo, Daisy doesn't have any of this, only the patches of hair.

Oh, they do both mention hair. You need to scroll down on the professorshouse one.  The PM I sent is about a rottie with patches of white hair appearing.
