Can anyone recommend a dried food (salmon only) that would be good for gaining weight or alternatively any extras I could feed to help weight gain?

Fish 4 Dogs do a good salmon food, no experiences of using it to gain weight though. Bionic Biotic is a good supplement for putting weight on dogs. I tried it on my girls last year during moults and they piled on the weight :-(

Salmon based extras? Or just toppings?

Tripe is excellent
Eggs
Oily Fish like sardines, pilchards
Fatty mince

Tripe - Where do I get that from?
Eggs - Raw or cooked?
Pilchards and Sardines - Can these be tinned?

You can get frozen tripe from most dog food companies first choice, natures menu, berriewood... don't get the stuff from butchers, its generally bleached which gets rid of all the goodness.
Raw eggs are better IMO- including the shells, but you might want to break them first or feed them outside as mine take them to their beds and make a mess :rolleyes:.
Yeah tinned sardines or pilchards in oil. We give them in tomato sauce sometimes too, but the tomato sauce can have quite a bit of sugar in, so its an occasional treat to spice things up.

Could you not feed a little bit more of the food they allready have?

lamb breast is very good aswell

I have tried but they aren't very food orientated (unless its chicken ;-) ) I still feed them twice a day and even then they don't always eat it all up. I can't feed them pork, lamb or beef (they have diarrhoea with all), would tripe upset them in the same way?

it's the stomach lining of, usually cow (ox tripe)

I am not sure they will be able to eat this but I could give it a go (we can usually tell pretty quickly if it doesn't agree). He's not like a rake or anything but I would like him to gain 1-2kg, are some dogs just always slender?
Normally every pet cavalier I see round here is grossly overweight :-o

Yes. I have a dog who would look a lot better if you couldn't see his ribs, but he just won't put weight on. All tests are normal; he's just a natural skinnimalink.

Its really frustrating he is very healthy and the vets have said he isn't thin enough for them to worry but he could do with putting some on. Its a shame I don't have the same problem :-o

my dog could do with just a bit more across his waistline and top of his bum but if i feed him extra seems to put it on his shoulders where its not needed

To me that sounds like a muscle/construction issue rather than weight. To build up his hindquarters more try flinging a ball up a steep slope (loose shale bings are excellent!) for him to race up after, build the time/amount of trips up gradually over a period of weeks. I'm assuming he is adult of course, you wouldn't want a pup running down the same steep slope :-)

I would say this too now I know what you have. Uphill running is the best for building muscle around the backend. We do it with the horses that have weak behinds. Works wonders
