Topic Dog Boards / Health / Frontline and Itching?

We use normal Frontline on all 3 of our dogs but our male GSD always seems to react to it.  Looking at his skin there is no inflamation or redness but he noticeably scratches more (at least every hour) for a couple of weeks after we put it on him.  It's happened twice now (1st time we thought it was coincidence) and I was wondering if anyone else had found this.
He doesn't scratch the application area but he seems to get itchy around his head and sides.
I am wondering if any of the other spot ons would be better or if they would do the same thing?

They all have slightly different chemical compositions, so try another variety.

I would be tempted to use a spray from the Vet rather than the Spot-on which concentrates the chemicals on one area. :(

I used the front line spray for years, with no ill effects and I used it as a preventative measure every three months on all of mien as my eldest was flea allergic.

I then had to use the spot on when travelling using the Pet Passport scheme.  the next time I used the spray on everyone the ones who had had the spot on version were terrible itchy as you describe, so much so that Jozi nibbled herself and caused hot spots and looked moth eaten for months.

My oldest subsequently died and I had left off using the Front line again for fear of a recurrence of the itching/chewing.

I have never had a flea issue since (or before), and so now simply use Vetzyme JDS insecticidal shampoo (smells like Vosene), when I bath the dogs, which seems to be quite sufficient, and I have a Household flea spray that stops the fleas from hatching should fleas get brought home.

The Active ingredient Fipronil is now no longer exclusive to Frontline and last year a range of new products containing it was launched called Effipro  and it is quite a bit cheaper.

We had this with Dakko when we used one of the Spot-on products - the poor dog was nearly driven mad with itching and as you say it took a couple of weeks for it to stop, no obvious skin problems or anything either. We only had it the once and we took him to the vet but they had never heard of it before but it was a few years ago now!

Do you use anything else with Dakko now?

I used spot on on Tuppence last year and she scratched incessantly for almost two weeks. I have used nothing since however as it is almost tick time I am going to have to use something or we can't go in the fields. I have bought the frontline spray but have been scared to use it before Crufts. Will try next week but dreading it

Dakko has been gone for a few years now and I don't think we used anything on him - we just kept an eye out for anything and I don't actually think he ever needed done again. Haven't had a problem with any of our other dogs or cats using Frontline Spot On just that once with him.

ETA I'm not certain it was Frontline Spot On we had used, I know it was a Spot-On product but it may have been the Bob Martin one from the pet shop now that I think about it, (sorry it was about 10 years ago now)

Had similar problem with advantix with one of the dogs when we used it for pet passport treatment, she was itchy and restless for about 24hrs after application. I now use Frontline when traveling and she seems ok ...
