Aww hope she feels better soon. I know of a leo who has had a plate in her pelvis, she is fine and dandy now as far as I'm aware

Its not a dog but ten years age my cat got hit by a car and had both his back legs broken. He had a tibial nail and screws on one leg, and a femoral nail with an external fixator on the other. He had to be kept in for 3 months but when it was all done, he didn't even have a limp and could still climb trees! He died 2 years ago from a splenic tumour but he was one great cat.

It is my girl Tanya is referring to.
She broke her pelvis November 2008 and had a plate and screws to put it all back together(you can see xray pictures of her in my profile/website) .
It was very hard 12 weeks as with pelvis they can not support it in anyway so the dog needs to be crated to avoid any movement.

I have got to know few other people with dogs who had breaks in various places and in most cases the end results have been good.
But only last week one little Leo girl had to be put to sleep because the plates in her broken leg gave away :(, a month after the operation...
So the resting and being very careful and only allowing restricted movement needs to be taken seriously!
Even when the dog seems to be doing good&want to run about, do not get in to false feeling of everything being ok and allowing them more freedom.
It takes time for the bone to re-knit itself and until it has done so, you need to be very very careful as plates/pins etc can only take limited pressure.
Accidents, one jumping up etc that can happen in few seconds and can be enough to destroy everything and take you back to beginning or in worse case, to the point that nothing can be done :(.

My own girl panicked whilst still at the vets and they thought she had pulled everything apart but luckily this was not the case...
This is when she came home to be looked after by us as I was not going to put it on anybody else and also being at home in familiar surroundings and with us was the best place for her.
Our girl is doing great now :), you would never believe what she went through little over a year ago.

Hi Minnie I hope your Shelby is ok, I have a male rough collie (a big boy) and he broke the 2 bones in his front leg last year 2 days before Crufts and had to have a plate fitted, trying to keep him still and quiet was the worst part as he is a very active dog but now he is back to his old self again, we were careful with his exercise for a long time taking it nice and slowly until we thought his leg was strong enough

Hi Shelby's operation was a complete success, we went to see her this morning she looks fine, saw her xrays plate is big and 8 shrews but all looks well. Vet said she should make a full recovery she will be coming home monday afternoon we cannot wait to have her back home. thank you all you have been a great help.

Hi minnie mouses.  have just picked up your thread and wanted to tell you how successful the growth plate has been for our boston terrier.  she's now 9 months old but at 4 months simply jumped from the sofa onto the floor and had a major break to her back leg.  at that age obviously the vet had to use the growth plate and we kept her in a puppy cage for the required 6 - 7 weeks until the vet advised otherwise.  this was awful for her but the outcome was worth it.  she's now a bouncy speedy bitch with absolutely no after effects at all - complete success story.  hope your girl will do as well.

Hi Shelby's home came home monday afternoon. All's well so far will be in a cage on her own for a few weeks.since she's been home she as done nothing but bark. The only think is that she wee's in the cage now & she has never done that before. My oh takes her in the garden but she does not go. She was so quite at the vets making up for it since she's been home. She is 6 years pixieell  though she acts daft.

> since she's been home she as done nothing but bark

Have you tried some boredom-busting things like feeding her meals in a kong/giving her a stuffed kong/giving her a cardboard box to shred with treats hidden in etc..? Or even some training, tricks perhaps that she could learn while laying down eg. head nod/shake or point to the cup with the treat hidden under using her nose etc..

> she wee's in the cage now & she has never done that before. My oh takes her in the garden but she does not go

She may not feel confidant enough to wee in the garden, but feels safe in her cage.
