Today me and the OH have taken on a 6 year old sheltie. She peed in the car as I drove her away poor thing, but other than that doesn't seem too worried.
We took them all for a lead walk together and it went very well, Missy had a little grumble and made a half hearted attempt to intimidate the new girl but desisted after a firm 'No', the new girl is very good, not reactive to dogs at all, she just turned her back when Missy put her show on so I am hoping for a smooth transition from a two dog to three dog household. We shall see though, Vic is desperate to play with her but he is being a gentleman for the moment and is just laying next to her.
The Sheltie feels a little on the plump side though and was quite exhausted on the walk, so she needs to shed a few pounds, I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow to have her checked, registered and microchipped so I will have her weighed at the same time.
Anyone got any tips to help me settle her in? Although to be fair to her she hasn't made a peep since we got in, she's completely crashed out.

Replying to my own post now, lol. Well took the sheltie (my OH has renamed her Ripley) to the vet this morning for an MOT and microchip and I can't believe how over weight she is. She is nearly 12kg! The fat dog poster at the vets says the ideal weight for a shetland sheepdog is 6-7 kg so I think its going to take a while getting her trim again. Under the fat her muscles feel very loose there is no tone to them at all so I imagine she's quite unfit as well as a chubba.
She also has quite a few sebaceous cysts which I have been advised to regularly bathe and keep an eye on. She is having a bath later because she is a bit pongy.

Where did you get her from? she sounds like she's landed on her feet with you.

There is a sheltie that I see on walks occasionaly and he is a confident little dog but I am told by hi ownere not all are so confident......he's a blue merle lovely colour.

I was looking for a new indoor cage for my ferrets on preloved and I saw her being advertised as 'free to a good home, no fault of her own' and to my amazement when I read the ad out, my OH said why don't you go and have a look at her! Even though she's gone to seed a bit now she's such a happy, confident little thing, you can tell someone put the work in with her at some point.

I was expecting to have to spend a lot more time 'winning her round' as I had read that the breed can be aloof with strangers but she's our new best friend, a very jolly girl :)
She enjoyed a good brushing yesterday but still has a big dreadlock behind her ear I'm struggling to tease out and she is sable and white.

Good for you giving this girl a new home, interesting name, I live near Ripley......is that the reason you chose the name, because of the town?

My oldest Malinois bitch is named Ripley (she's in my avatar), when I got her I said I needed a name for a tough bitch, and a friend said "Ripley! as in the tough bitch in the Alien films!" gave us such a laugh it stuck . :) :)

My OH loves Alien so they are both named for the same Ripley!
The mini Ripley is very funny to watch, seeing a tiny little dot herd a giant lurcher about is comedy gold and she manages to do it with just a few tiny bird like peeps.
I think I'm the one who's landed on my feet with this one, she's so brilliant she has even managed to make friends with Missy, who is so grumpy with other dogs her nick name is Misery (she's still my number one girl though :) )
