A friend of mine is trying to get her bitch mated and is having some problems so I thought I would ask on here as there are so many knowledgebale people here.
The bitch is on day 12 of her season and has gone to stay with the stud dog owner and has been there for 3 days. She is having absolutely nothing to do with the dog at all and is apparently being quite agggressive with him. I assume this means she is still not ready to mate yet?
She is still bleeding quite heavily. the stud dog owner said she won't mate until she stops bleeding. The bitch has always been more interested in people and is not really into mixing with other dogs. so my friend is worrying that even when the time is right she might not want to mate with a dog. Is this likely or will hormones take over and encourage her to want to mate?

Lots of bitches don't stop bleeding throughout their season, and an experienced stud dog owner would know that.

Her flow certainly needs to have reduced to a watery colour before attempting to mate her. It is not uncommon for bitches not to be ready until days 16+ so I would say no need to worry yet. I would personally keep them seperate for a while which I'm sure the studs owner is doing.

Our last female was still bleeding red when we mated her, blood test said she was ready, dog was very keen, i thought she would miss as she bled for a week after mating too, she had 11 puppies, they all very different.

I had a bitch some years back, large breed, who was not ready for mating until day 17 one season, day 21 another, resulting in two litters of 11 and 12 ! She always bled throughout her season, although I do tend to see the change in colour with my cavaliers.
I would say shes not ready yet. I have a bitch who would turn aggressive during her seasons due to hormone change but would stand for one day only to be mated and that was it. She was mated day 12 of one season (8 puppies) and day 20 of another season (9 puppies). So I would say when the time is right you will know.
I too have had bitches bleed all through a season with no colour change and produce a litter of puppies so I never go off that.

I've never seen a change in colour of the blood in any bitch of mine. It's the same throughout the season.

All mine bleed throughout and some as long as four weeks, yet no infections, and go on to have pup if pregnant.
I am a little worried as to how experienced this stud dog owner is if they do not realise this and more so that they do not realise it is normal for a bit h to be pretty forceful in saying no when not ready.
Also most experienced studs will not pester a bitch that isn't ready, so won't need telling much, and so are in no danger from the bitch.
The dog is a champion and has been used several times before so I guess the owner does have some idea what she is doing.
Apparently what is worrying my friend most is that her bitch does not seem to like the stud dog. The bitch had been flirting and standing for her neutered male companion and desperately trying to get him to mate her which is why she was taken to the stud when she was but won't have anything to do with the stud?

Owning a Champion who has sired a few litters does not make the owner knowledgable of other owners bitches...The best way to know if a girl is ready is to progesterone test..
I had a girl who would stand for anything from day 4, a gust of wind would have her tail over and braced, but her litter came from a day 22 mating... you cannot assume that because a bitch is standing, that she is ready

Also bitches will happily stand for kennel mates (in my case other bitches, but expect they may view a castrated male in the same light) long before they are ready for an actual male.

My cousins two lab bitches spend nearly the whole year flagging to each other lol,
I suppose it just shows every bitch, cycle and mating is very different.
One of mine will stand and flag 365 days of the year. So I never use it as a guide to when shes ready.

Agree with several others on here that bleeding is not relevant. I have girls that bleed right through mating, and continue until the end of the season. Still have puppies too!
I also have one bitch that has very short seasons. If I don't catch her on days 8 - 10 then I don't get a litter. So, while others have mentioned that it could be too early - you could also have missed out.
As to some bitches not liking the chosen stud, I do have one girl that is quite reserved. I can't say nervous, because she isn't, but she isn't "in your face" like some of my girls. However, when the time is right, she acts like a wanton hussy, and would stand for a camel.
With visiting bitches, I usually find that the vulva starts to change to flaccid when they are nearing the right time.
If she has not been well socialised with other dogs she may not eventually accept the male. I've experienced it first hand, also with a temperament like this she may not be one for breeding anyway. But most bitches calm down and accept when they are ovulating and fertile. Changes in blood colour and consistency varies from bitch to bitch and would not go by that alone as a rule of thumb.

As everyone has said she is too early. Most dogs wouldnt mate her unless she was ready. some do, but not all just keep waiting for the loss to go to the pink watery colour then she should will change. i have had one mate on last day, mate 19th day, and one mate 7th day all resulting in pups. just tell him to be patient. If she is still aggressive, try this one keep the stud dog tight on a lead and turn his head between your knees now let the bitch approach him. He may be too keen and she may be feeling threatened by him. We managed to mate a bitch who was aggressive to him each day, but she didnt like being pounced on and had to make the first move!
Best of luck
just keep waiting for the loss to go to the pink watery colour then she should will change. Yes, if she's one of the many that DON'T change colour she will change as it will of course mean she's finished her season....and won't get mated at all.
Just heard from my friend that her bitch has been mated successfully so it asounds like it was just too early. thanks for the help.
She has another question but I will start a new thread for that.
