Hi,

I doubt your pug will eat butchers fresh tripe its totally different what you get from a butcher, I bought it once and cooked it ours mine wouldnt touch it. What you get from pets and home etc.. is the green tripe.  For a pug I would give roughly a quarter of a square with some biscuit. You can buy it cheaper online at www.naturesmenu.co.uk on their website they also do a range of tripe nuggets which might be more suitable for a smaller dog as you can defrost as much as you need rather than defrosting a whole square. The tripe nuggets are a mixture of tripe, liver and veg or fruit very healthy but you can only buy these online. They also do a very good quality tinned range.

Thanks for that, might nip into pets at home on the way home tonight, so you would say a quartre a block a day? To start with maybe  half a quarter?

I would buy a bag of the minced, you can defroswt a little at a time then, pets at home sell it, free flow minced tripe.

Thanks for the info, do you know how much it is?

Don't cook the tripe before you feed it - if you do you will live with the smell for days :-O

LOL, you get used to the smell.
When I first got Buster (who came with a supply of tripe, LOL), my kids would heave if I was feeding the dog. Since then they may wrinkle thier nose up, but no more gagging :)

If I'm using the free-flow tripe, I defrost it in the microwave (on defrost setting) (if it's the blocks, I leave them in a tub in the fridge),  but have left it in too long once and cooked it - don't think I'd get used to that smell

I think I am tripe pong immune! Been feeding it for years now and most days my 3 have some.  Big mistake one day was defrosting it in the microwave when it wasnt quite thawed - OMG the house stank and hubby and kids not impressed.  Wont be doing that again in a hurry.
My 3 dogs love it.  :-)

We left a few blocks in the garage fridge once as we couldnt fit it in the freezer, we forgot about it (and the fridge was playing up at the time) a week later i went in the fridge for something OMG, the smell knocked you out, it never ever went neither. No one told us when we bought the fridge that they dont function proper in a garage, grr!

oh gosh annastasia dont bring the subjet of freezers/fridges and garages up its a nightmare I have been using a fridge and freezer in the gargage for years. Since getting a new on nothing but problems apparently or so i am told its the way they design them now the thermostats are different. Great when you have nowhere else to put the dog meat and need an overflow fridge for those extras. Currently have v old freezer working well atm, brand new freezer (beko cos they are supposed to work in the garage and I needed abigger one for the dog food) and a fridge freezer that fridge doesn't work but freezer does most of the time.
I have also got so used to tripe i almost dont notice unless it gets warmed up by mistake lol

Oh the joys, it brings back memories when I used to get whole cows stomachs, wash them out in the bath using a shower, and then hack them into meal sized portions ready for the freezer. We had a lovely rescue GSD at the time who was a complete gentleman and would never dream of pinching anything, except on tripe day. I used to drape a piece over the side of the bath and keep my back to him, he would dare himself to sneak forwards and pinch it "without being seen". Once outside the bathroom you heard him charge downstairs where upon he would rag it and splatter the walls. I never could understand why my Mum used to hate me feeding tripe.

I'm laughing at the thought!   Back in the 70's I used to pick mine up from the slaughter house, and my dogs loved it.   My boss at the time, asked if I would look after his Collie while he went away with his lady friend.

When they came back, I took the dog into work, and the boss took him home that night.  Next day he asked me what the bloody hell I'd been feeding him!!!  :-)

We gave  the fridge freezer to an elderly lady and it works perfect in her house, and bought a Beko freezer only, and thats perfect, dont know why we bought a fridge/freezer in the 1st place as we didnt need the fridge part, think it was a bargain at the time in B&Q,

I learnt the hard way that tripe is not balanced in it's calcium to phosporous ratio for a puppy.   My first LM bitch was fed tripe as part of her diet as was a friend's Ridgeback puppy and both ended up with growth plate problems & requiring quite high doses of calcium to put density back into their bones.

Have exactly the same problem with a Beko fridge-freezer - my kitchen is very cold (extension, and a bit damp too) and every time the temp drops below 10C it stops working. Haven't got the space for a separate chest freezer suitable for shed/garage at the moment (Iceland do them for about £125), so have had to put up with not having a freezer from Nov til March. Not very convenient over Xmas, and had frozen peas last week for the first time in months! Sounds daft doesn't it!

I understand it is the modern eco-friendly fridges/fridge freezers that do this... I guess the manufacturers assume people have wonderfully heated modern homes these days! Hoping to get electricity put out to my shed this year (landlord isn't the best or easiest to deal with) then I can have an undercounter fridge in the kitchen and a small chest freezer in the shed.

Back to topic - have been using canned commercial Butchers Tripe food recently for my dog, and am amazed at his better skin & coat, and smaller poos. He has sensitive skin but hasn't scratched at all since using it. I'm gobsmacked as I never thought a commercial food would suit him. When freezer is finally home & handy, I might try the "Real Thing"! Just goes to show how individual dogs are and what suits one, doesn;t suit another.
