Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / When To Premate?
- By jackson [gb] Date 24.02.10 14:32 UTC
Her ladyship came into season on Saturday. I am using Idexx labs for the premate test and have the kit here. Obviously they are closed over the weekend, so I could either get the bloods done and sent tomorrow (Thurs) or Monday. I am inclined to wait until Monday as she will be on day 9 then and last time we mated her on days 11 and 13. But should I take her tomorrow, just in case?

(I haven't used Idexxx before, I used my previous vets in house for premates)

Thankyou!

They work on saturdays, so if you get the bloods sent friday you should get a result saturday afternoon. In my opinion you are better off going too early than too late.
Good Luck

Same here. better wasting £30 odd quid than having the disappointment of missing. IMO anyway

I agree, we usually do first test day 10, but because that fell on a Sunday this time around we got it done the Friday before (day 8) to be on safe side and she was ovulating that day with best day for breeding the Sunday, if we'd waited we'd have missed it

Thanks, I hadn't realised they work Saturdays. I think sending bloods Friday is definitely the best option then.

Unless you have a late bitch like mine, that was mated days 18 - 20 last time and this time so far days 20 - 22!

If that is the case you may be advised to repeat the test several more times, usually every two days until it looks close.

Thankyou. She was mated on days 11 and 13 last time, which resulted in a litter, so hopefully not too many. However, for various reasons, (me being pregnant with twins is one and recurrent phantom pregnanies another) if she doesn't take this time we will not be having another litter from her, so I'd really rather waste the money as this will be our last chance to have a pup from her to show.

Yes i'd rather test too early than miss it, good luck x
