I have an 18 week old beagle pup. I started taking her to training class at 12 weeks old and she has been quite good so far. All the other pups in the class have been let off their leads outside but i am frightend to let her off as when she is in the garden she ignores me and doesn't come to me even for food. I have also looked at other beagle web sites that say you can never let a beagle off its lead without it running away, is this true ? We live in the countryside and have plenty of open fields but i am frightened that she runs away and we lose her as she can run alot faster than me. Any tips or suggestions as i want to make sure she gets plenty of freedom.

Try using a flexi lead (one that winds back in automatically) and let her wander away from you and then shout on her if she dosen't come back give a slight tug on the flexi lead and call her again, keep doing this until she does it and when she does come back give her loads of praise or a treat.Do this for a couple of weeks and i'm sure she'll get the hang of it.:)
Good luck.
Jenny.

hi,
i would be cautsious were you let your beagle off and being a pup you need to do all recall on a long lead, as beagles are scent hounds, if they get the wiff of a scent they will be off and no amount of calling will they come back utill they have found the scent they were after, some can be very obiedient depends on how strong her natural instincts are.regards tina
