Ok I know we have been here before but my dyson dc04 has just packed up. I can get dyson in for about £70.00 because the motor has died or can get a reconditioned one of ebay for about the same. Does anybody havethe dc14 (animal) or the dc07 what are the like for clearing fur. In our case mainly long gsd fur that comes out in chunks
- By Pedlee Date 23.02.10 15:49 UTC
I've had an animal in the past and didn't find it that good (3 Goldies at the time). I find the Henry I've got now much better although I do find changing the bags a bit of a pain.
- By Star [gb] Date 23.02.10 15:53 UTC
Totally agree with Pedlee. I threw my Dyson Animal in the bin and bought  a Henry
- By Whistler [gb] Date 23.02.10 15:58 UTC
Now Ive had dysons for about 15 years swear by them with a Cocker and BC. I use the pull along one and have no problems. We had a henry here in the office where our two spend most of the time and Ive just changed it for a hoover!
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 23.02.10 15:58 UTC
Very disappointed with my Dyson, my old one was great but the new one I bought was an  "improved " model, trouble is I don't like what they have improved and they took away things I liked. I will wait for mine to pack in and buy a Henry as I have heard good things.
- By Sue H Date 23.02.10 15:59 UTC
I have an upright dyson for cat hair & stray bits of litter etc...but have also just bought a henry...i prefer the Henry!
- By Tanya1989 [ru] Date 23.02.10 15:59 UTC
I've got a Vax Pet Vacuum

absolutely brill, best thing ever bought!
- By lmda [gb] Date 23.02.10 16:03 UTC
Our dyson is absolutely rubbish, complete waste of money. It seems to push the hair around rather than suck it up! So annoying as obviously we need to hoover every day with two GRs and now a puppy that seems to like the taste of hair! Urgh!
- By ClaireyS Date 23.02.10 16:04 UTC
Snap !!  My Dyson animal died this weekend (motor went, same as yours) ...... and good riddance, it was rubbish.  I found it would pick up dog hair ok but any little bits of dirt it would spit back out

We have replaced it with a little samsung pull along thing which cost about £70, it is sooo powerful, we have mostly hard floors and you can feel underfoot how clean the floors are after you have been round, you have to turn the suction down to clean the dog beds .... and it picks up everything

My OH even sent me a text yesterday lunchtime to say how great said new vacuum is
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 23.02.10 16:06 UTC
I used to have the dc07 and it was useless!! I think psychologically you think they are fantastic and pcking loads up because you can 'see' it but my carpet never looked like I had hoovered and mastiffs aren't long haired!!! I swapped it and on recommendation from a family friend who owns a hoover shop bought a sebo. I have never looked back, have had it 4 years next month and love it!! Only problem I have is it is sometimes too efficient and I have been known to lose stray socks that have accidently been hoovered over!!!
- By CVL Date 23.02.10 16:09 UTC
I have the dc14 origin, which I was told was the same just without the extra turbine head for on the hose (you can buy it separately) or the allergy filters... so the same power, but much cheaper at the time.  I think it's brilliant, I know not everyone is a fan of dysons.  It sucks so hard it lifts our ill-fitted carpet up from the floor.  Admittedly I'm dealing with Lab hair (and my own which I'm sure is falling out!), but I'd definitely recommend it.  Only had one problem with the belt attaching the brush bar snapping, ordered a new belt and could fit it myself.. it was just a bit tricky.

My Dyson Animal broke the first time within a fortnight, and then Dyson told me if I had more than 2 pets I was classified as commercial premises and the guarantee would not be valid. Miele Cat & Dog said the same. I had the Dyson fixed but it never picked up well, I can remember going over one of my OWN hairs about twenty times before it was sucked up. Eventually binned it. I've tried pretty much every cleaner there is, but NOTHING beats a plain old Henry -or a nice pink Hetty as I now also have. Only vacuum I've ever had that has lasted for years, all the previous ones had to be binned within 6 months. And you can get them so cheaply as well, especially if shopping around.

Henry here!!
- By ClaireyS Date 23.02.10 16:22 UTC

>bought a sebo

my mum swears by hers, she has had it years.
- By annastasia [gb] Date 23.02.10 16:24 UTC
Kirby i have, expensive but the best thing i have ever bought, had it 13 years now with no problems.
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 23.02.10 17:17 UTC
Am not impressed with my Dyson Animal. Motorised brush always clogging up and I DO think that it loses suction when the drum is full &/or the sponge filters need washing.
How daft is their rule about more than 2 dogs etc? Have had several over the years but I will not be buying another one.
- By Tanya1989 [ru] Date 23.02.10 17:20 UTC
We had a kirby, we paid about a £1000 for it 10 yrs ago with all the attachments and it kept breaking over and over again, so we gave it away
- By furriefriends Date 23.02.10 17:40 UTC
Thanks for all your replys oh gosh now I am confused. I am fully carpeted except kitchen and if i have my way the hall when we recarpet (soon I hope) and my worry with henry is I am not good with pull a longs I always find they hurt my back after a bit , must be getting old , maybe i should borrow one ! Think the animal is going out the window by the looks of things
- By Harley Date 23.02.10 17:43 UTC
My old Dyson was brilliant - the new one is dreadful. I have the pull along version and have also bought a cheap upright from Tesco just to hoover the floors which have carpets. It is really good at removing dog hair from the carpets but useless on wooden or tiled floors as it just seems to blow the hair around which means the dog hair is never close enough to the roller to get sucked in.

I am getting a Henry next time around as so many dog owners seem to whole heartedly recommend it.
- By ceejay Date 23.02.10 18:21 UTC
I had a dyson years ago - it's suction wasn't very good.  I bought a Bissell which lasted 5 minutes!  Now I have another Dyson - just an ordinary one - it does the job and is much better designed then the old one.   My old one is still going!  My d-i-law uses it -as long as filters are kept clean and it is regularly emptied it does the job (she doesn't have dogs just two cats, parrot and little boy!)
- By Dogz Date 23.02.10 18:41 UTC
Well I disagree with most on here.............
I have the new animal dyson ball, I got it via amazon and love it, its suction is best ever and I love the ball manoeuvre.
I do empty it everytime I use it as it doesn't have huge capacity, thats no problem though.
Karen :)

> We had a kirby, we paid about a £1000 for it 10 yrs ago with all the attachments and it kept breaking over and over again, so we gave it away

Really? mine has never broke down,, OMG watch it break down tomorrow, ours was £750 an ex demo machine,
- By loucon [gb] Date 23.02.10 19:04 UTC
i've got an animal dc14 and its the best. was gutted when the motor went but it was well worth paying dyson 63.00 to come and fix it, not only did they put a new motor in they put a new electrical lead on it, a new filter, cleaned it all out and gave it a once over for the 63.00. couldnt wait to get it up and running again and felt lost without it. my other hoover was nothing compared to it. i've only got the 2 dogs but have to hoover the fur daily and it's got great power
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 23.02.10 19:11 UTC
I've had a Dyson Animal for about 8 years; I had the engineer out once because the motor started cutting out, and he practically rebuilt it for £60! Well pleased. :-) It's great for shifting awkward dal hair, and was also good at removing the long hair from my mother's golden retriever.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.02.10 19:24 UTC
I have the DC014 all floors and it is very good as was my DC07 and the original DC01.

I did like the original one best I think, but an ex girlfriend of one of my brothers forced the wand in wrong and jammed it, so I got a new one.  Each has lasted at least five years.

I would have a  Henry, but I just can't stand pull along vacuums, always had uprights.
- By STARRYEYES Date 23.02.10 20:46 UTC
I have 2 dyson 07 and 04 one upstair one down... I pay one insurance on mine which I have claimed on a number of times over the years,  always same bloke he is really good will change everthing on the machine to make it practically brand new.
I wouldnt be without it .
Now having discussed the different number they produce with this bloke he told me that the animal isnt worth the extra money for the dogs that the only thing he would recommend that you canbuy as an added extra is the brush which is available seperately anyway.

I dont normally believe in these type of insurances but for the dyson I am delighted with it as I have had a new hoover over and over again apart from the outside of the machine which I dont care about.

Also my dogs drop fluff balls rather than  short hair which I think is more difficult to pick up.
- By briedog [gb] Date 23.02.10 20:54 UTC
just bought a vax maxiam 2200 god it sucks up the carpets
always have vax
- By LJS Date 23.02.10 21:52 UTC
I have had all types of vacuums ( Dyson. Hoover , Vax etc I have lst count ! )  and the one I will stick with now without doubt is Henry

The Henry I have now is so good especially with the animal attachment as the difference in what is sucks up now on carpets is amazing

He is also so good at hard surfaces.

I also think that builders always use Henry's and they are British ! That has my vote ! :-D
- By Tessies Tracey Date 23.02.10 23:34 UTC
Only ever had two Dysons.  The first was some 10 years ago, but it did die a death in the end, because it didn't have the washable filters and I'm afraid I used it to vacuum brick dust after building our extension.
However, my 2nd dyson, the DC07 allergy, has been magnificent.  Can't fault it.  Washable filters, which I do look after religiously, no loss of suction.
Does exactly what it says on the tin :)
- By Peregrine1 [gb] Date 24.02.10 10:41 UTC
Miele Cat and dog here - thinks it's brilliant.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.02.10 10:53 UTC
Seems all the other better vacuums seem to be pull along, which I hate.  Now if only Henry would adapt a model to upright, I would get one.
- By annastasia [gb] Date 24.02.10 11:02 UTC

> Seems all the other better vacuums seem to be pull along, which I hate.

Yes i do too, i pull them so hard they fall ove, im clumsy lolx
- By Sunbeams [gb] Date 24.02.10 11:15 UTC
I also had the Dyson Animal, was good to start with, but wasn't that long before it started loosing suction - would only work properly if you washed the sponge filter every couple of days (before it was every 6 months!) - so got fed up with it, got a Henry, it's great - would get another one.  Much cheaper as well.
- By furriefriends Date 24.02.10 15:35 UTC
I am with you brainless I think I will be getting another dyson as I can get on for 70.00 not the animal and a henry pull along for the worst bits and the hard floor that is untill henry develop henry upright. Maybe we should send them a suggestion brainless  !!
- By Tanya1989 [ru] Date 24.02.10 15:41 UTC
Awww, but an upright henry would look no way near as cute as normal henry :-D
- By kayc [gb] Date 24.02.10 15:51 UTC
I have gone through 3 very expensive dysons one costing nearly £400,  The last one packed up just a few weeks ago, and I refused to forkout another couple of hundred pounds for it to last just 6months... I went to tesco and bought an own brand upright, and it is so much better than my dyson Animal... The suction is fantastic, and I dont need to continuously go over the same patch of carpet to remove dog hair...

It cost me a whopping £36.00 :-)

I would never have another dyson :-(
- By arched [gb] Date 24.02.10 17:12 UTC
Our Miele is 9 years old and it's still great. We didn't buy the Cat&Dog version but we bought the 'turbo brush' which they had on the Cat&Dog seperately which worked out cheaper (not sure now if the head would be the same on the Cat&Dog version). They did a demo with different cleaners on 'This Morning' a few weeks ago and the Miele C&D won and it always does really well in Which? reports.
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 24.02.10 21:02 UTC
Sebo for me, I am hopless with hoovers and normally ythey always blow up but i have had the sebo for a few years now and its great. I change the filters every few months and just put a new roller brush on it which has made it like new.
I just couldn't a cylinder type vacum as i found it really hard work when once tried

The miele is the 'best buy' on the Which? website, in fact all the miele models do well.
- By ClaireyS Date 24.02.10 21:27 UTC
I wanted a Henry this time round but on the advice thingys in Currys it said it wasnt suitable for pet owners so we bypassed it !
- By MsTemeraire Date 24.02.10 22:44 UTC
Anyone heard of a Henry Hound?
wondering if it's just a silly name, or a Henry adapted for dog owners, or nothing like?
- By suejaw Date 25.02.10 16:43 UTC
I think the decision for certain vacuum's will depend on the flooring people have and also the type of animals they have. The fur which comes out of our Lab is very different to the Bernese.
The Bernese fur does get pushed about the rooms by our Dyson and it drives me nuts, i now use an old slicker brush on the carpet, quicker and easier to pick up the fur...But not good on the old back.
The Dyson however is pretty good at collecting the Lab fur...
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 25.02.10 17:10 UTC
Ehh do you think it's something about SWD owners and VAX.  I also swear buy them.  Unfortunately my last one was chewed by a dog I was looking after and haven't been able to afford another as I always get the 3in1 Vax.  Love them and hate not having one now.  Have these new daft fangled things and seeing as our dogs don't moult they are rubbish!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 25.02.10 17:30 UTC
I've had two Dysons - and still have both of them. DC02 (I think) bought 10+ years ago and currently use for building dust/small rubble and an Animal bought just after we got Tara - so at least 7 years ago. Neither has ever broken down and the Animal still copes well with Aussie hair :)

vax pet vac  even with 3 newfies its never let me down , its used everyday and its 5 years old
- By ChristineW Date 25.02.10 20:46 UTC
If  you have the 04 can you tell me if you can lower it to suit carpet heights or smooth floors?  I have inherited my mother's as she is now in a home and won't need it!  Its hardly been used but I think it's awful, it won't suck anything up and I can't see if I can get it lower to the ground.    The belt always slips off on it though.  I have a £36 cheapie Tesco's hoover that sucks up a lot better but it's gone through 3 belts in 6 months and started smoking underneath on Tuesday so that's going back for a refund.
- By furriefriends Date 25.02.10 22:18 UTC
You cant change the height on either of the 04 or 01 I am afraid.I must say that I have been pleased with my dysons so far and was just wondering if i should "upgrade" to an animal hence my post (I wont be ). Its odd how different our experiences are with them. Sounds like you may have a problem with that particular one regarding the belt never had that happen and I have had two 04 one dead now and one still working. Is it the right belt ? jsut a thought. I would ring dyson they will overhaul it for about £35 if you want them to. As suejaw said I think it varies accoring to type of carpets and type of dogs. Mine have been good up to now. have you taken it apart its a bit like lego lots of bits come off and its amazing where the fur can get stuck. It may have a lump stuck somewhere.
- By ChristineW Date 25.02.10 22:20 UTC
Yes it is Dyson belts direct from them.     The vacumn cleaner has hardly been used.   My mum vacumned once a week, she lived on her own, no animals, so the flat was never dirty I doubt the machine would need an overhaul.  It just confirms what I think about Dyson's (They are rubbish!).
- By LJS Date 25.02.10 22:34 UTC

Never trust anything they say ! They are told what they need to sell and they have to sell based on their targets rather than the best products  ! ;-)

We love Henry and I am still considering getting a Henrietta BUT we will make sure if we decided to make ickle hoovers we will health test them  ( if they last longer that the guaranntee) and if we can produce a better baby ( what do you call a baby hoover? ) or do we leave this to the experts in the R&D Dept of Numatic to do this  :-p
- By furriefriends Date 25.02.10 23:01 UTC
Love you post LJS   lots of little henrys how sweet , they even may have a 5 generation pedigree too lol
- By LJS Date 25.02.10 23:22 UTC
lots of little henrys how sweet

We took our Henry round to our home ( we are living in rented whilst we have been sorting out major leaks 2 years later....) as we are on the final hurdle before we move back in !

We left our Henry with our friend's Henry ( he is a good friend doing the electrics) and Mike wondered if left alone they would make little Henries. I mentioned firstly they were both boys so probabilty unlikely unless surgeracy was involved and the were also hoovers . I then said however if we had a Henrietta then that would change ............:-p

But little Henry Hoovers...... Oh how lovely !
