My bitch cam einto season on Saturday. Vulva not very swollen, but is swelling a bit today. However, previously the blood on her season has been bright red, but this time when I wipe her vulva it is brown. I have never noticed this before with her or with any of my other bitches. It doesn't smell other than what a  season smells like, not offensive, and certainly isn't green tinged in anyway, it just looks like 'old' blood.

She's totally her normal self, eating and drinking normally and not depressed, other than bit fed up as she always is at the start of her season, but extra cuddles have sorted that!

I am going to take her to the vet in the morning, but wondered if anyone else has had this or knows why her season is like this?

I wouldnt be overly concerned by this, some of my bitches have often had more of a browny discharge rather than a bright red one. As long as your bitch is well in herself and perfectly normal and the discharge does not smell bad in any way then I wouldnt be too worried.

mine too, often the birght red starts a few days later.

Same here, starts off brownish colour and then goes heavy and much more bright red.  I wouldn't worry either :)

Same with my bitch, she has brownish first then red.

Thanks everyone. I am so paranoid! I have never found this before, but it is reassurring to know some people have had the same thing.

I took her to the vet tonight in the end, just to be sure. He said it might be a slight infection and has given me a three day course of anti-biotics just in case.
