Im looking for suggestions please. Im having visitors (2 adults). They will leave Merseyside at 6pm after work to travel to Edinburgh. Im assuming they will arrive at 11pm. No other way to put this but what will i give them to eat at that time of night. They had planned to arrive around early evening and was planning dinner but wouldnt think at 11pm they would want a dinner

Thanks in advance

Something on toast, cheese, eggs (scrambled, fried, poached), sardines, beans? Suppose it depends on how close you are to the visitors, if my OH's mum or something was coming to visit I'd be in a fluster and would never dream of offering something on toast in case she thought my hospitality was rubbish!
But if it was my friends something on toast is good, they can have a choice without you having to get a fridge full of stuff from the shops and you can do it quick so you can spend time with your guests instead of cooking.

Ok I've thought what I'd do, I'd make soup and fresh rolls earlier in the day. If they are hungry you can quickly heat some up and if they aren't it's not a wasted effort because you can have it the next day for lunch.

I'd go for soup and rolls, with cheese and fruit to pick at afterwards.

Can you ask them?

If it were me doing that journey my OH and I would probably grab a sandwich and a coffee on the move and wouldn't expect to be fed when we arrived.  If we were planning to stay up late and chat til quite late into the night then it depends what we might be drinking.  I might fancy a handful of crisps with a glass of wine or something sweet with a cup of tea. :)

Im with Pookin a nice soup and crunchy fresh bread, alternative something on toast, it would not do to be hungry on the way to bed but try and avoid cheese its a bit heavy.

Toast -  Pate, veggie and meat alternative with grapes ect - nice fresh veggie soup should hit the mark. Or simply make a nice warming milky drink if they have eaten.

But sometimes a cup of tea a couple of biscuits and bed is the only answer, be the ideal hostess in the morning!

Maybe just some nibbles - breadsticks/crisps/celery/carrot sticks and hummous/dips etc. Cheese, biscuits chutney. with a glass of wine. yumyum. OR tea and toast/cake

They will probably grab something on the way so why not ask them in advance?

I would also ask in advance as if I was travellng with my partner we would grab something on the way and wouldn't expect to be fed on arrival at all!

I'm a soup person too, takes hardly any preparation just chop veg and boil up stock, and some nice crusty bread, then maybe cheese and crackers. Its nice and light too
