does anyone know if other countries allow affixes to be registered that are already registered in the uk,as ive just seen a bis winner in europe with my affix? i'm sure when i was trying to get my affix granted the kc turned some choices down as there were already affixes in other countries the same, but do other countries have the same criteria or do they allow as long as no-one in the same country has it? any info gratefully received,as i dont want people thinking i now have a bis winner of another breed in europe! (though some people might be flattered!) thanks, roy.
Ahh problem solved, i rang the kc and they say they have no jurisdiction over kennel names registered in other countries and vice versa, hence someone being allowed to use my affix name abroad, but they did say should they try to show over here the name wouldnt be allowed.confusing, maybe i ought to put a disclaimer on my site saying im not connected to other affixes of the same name in other countries? i was just shocked to see in dog world my affix going bis! lol
If we were in the FCI, one affix would only be able to be used once no matter what the country. However the KC is of course not affiliated to any other body hence it can happen.
My affix is also in another country. But they are doing well so not really a problem, I guess the only time it can be a problem is if it is associated with a breeder who is known to have genetic health issues in their lines or cruelty issues etc, as many of us deal with other countries that could cause a problem to be affiliated with them even by name.
But, to be honest if that were the case I would just change my affix. :-)
Your affix is only protected in the UK as long as you keep paying to maintain it.
FCI countries have a register and affixes are supposed to be unique among member counties, but I suppose those that already existed before countries joined (such as Ireland) there would e duplicates.
there is the same affix in my breed in Australia and USA.
youre right, marianne and brainless, the kc said they can only protect my affix within their jurisdiction,i.e the uk,(and i've not let it lapse since i got it) and therefore it could be duplicated and registered with other countries governing bodies.on the fci website i did a search on their kennel name section and my affix is not there,so i'm guessing the dog in question has come to europe via another country. i was just so shocked to see a photo in dog world with a bis winning dog in europe with my affix!
scary though,to think potentially someone could go into your breed if you were highly successful,(i might add i'm nowhere near that level!)breed litters and show dogs riding on your success with a duplicate affix,i'm sure it might fool some people.
What if someone from the UK were to buy a puppy from the people with the same Affix as yours - would they not be able to show it here under that Affinx - how would that work?
I don't think that would happen. Can't remember what the Irish kennel club do if a dog has same affix as one of theirs, anyone, it must happen occasionally?
