hi i am getting a staffy later in the year and the parents are both hc and l2-hga clear and the sire is phpv unaffected but the dam hasn't would i still need to test the puppy for this test and if so how old do they have to be i known that this test is done yearly if any can help let me know please

Are you saying that the dam hasn't been tested for phpv?

If not, do you know why not?

Congenital or inherited?

Both I believe, hence why I asked if the dam was tested.

eta  it is thought that only a few breeds suffer from inherited PHPV, the SBT being one of them.

I only queried it because it's quite usual to think that inheritable and congenital mean the same thing.

No worries.   :) I must admit I wasn't 100% sure if it was congenital as well as inherited until I had a good read.

i cant say that it has but as its a newer test it doesnt say on the kennel club that its the phpv test it just says eye screening and as it hasnt got that test written on its dog page like the sire's has. so really the answer to the question would be yes i do need to have puppy tested

What is? PHPV testing?  My dogs' sire was tested for PHPV in 2001.

On the KC website if you look up the registered name of the dam/sire, it does only say 'eye screening' and then the results and date of testing.

However, the dog will have been tested for any hereditary/inherited eye diseases known to that breed.

So for example, I have looked up my two dogs sire and the results say L2Hga - clear, HC-HSF4 - clear, and then undearneath in the the eye screening section - Eye disease - unaffected.

Are you looking on the KC website, or at actual paperwork for the dogs? 

i have looked on the kc website and like you said it only has eye screening.the reason i asked is cos the sire has phpv unaffected on his profile but the dam hasnt

Just checked my own and it only says unaffected for eye test (which would cover everything I assume).

If there is nothing for eye testing for the dam, then she hasn't been done, or else very recently and the results not on there yet.

PHPV & PPSC have no known mode of inheritance. It is possible for 2 unaffected animals to produce a completely clear litter and it is also possible for them to produce a complete litter of affected, also works the same for affecteds to produce with the same result, so i would at this time be thinking it's pot luck.
For PHPV the eye examination will tell you if a pup etc has it or not, if test says no then it will never get it, therefore no need to test again. For PPSC it is only a result for there & then & no guarantee that your dog will not develop this condition later on hence the reason that they reccomend anual examination.
The AHT are in the stages of deveoping a DNA test for these condtions but cannot go further with their research without getting the bloods from affected animals to try to link a gene from.
