Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bleeding after mating...

Hi guys I need help with my 1 1/2 year old bitch...

Today is her 18th day in heat and she still hasnt let my male mount her and I noticed he looks having less drive to mount her but still does so I decided to help him. Before doing so I checked if she is still having discharges and she does but in only small drops so I proceeded and was successful. After they broke up and were sleeping I noticed the male licking the floor with blood like its her 1st week in season.

Why is there blood? Is it normal? I am concerned that I may have forced her too soon. Was there damage done to her?

Thanks a lot in advance guys! Please advise me on this..

Oh by the way its her first time mating but second heat. Thanks

Why would anyone force a bitch?  And risk doing damage?

Okay that came out wrong but nevertheless  correct... I just held her so she wouldnt sit or move away besides Ive ask help on this and they said that some bitch would just not let the dog mate with her just because she didnt like him and that you are to assist them. Besides they told me there wont be any damage in assisting mating as long as they dont accidentally come out of the tie abruptly due to the bitch being stressed out on her first time, which didnt happen and came off gently. Thanks for the response. Any idea about the bleeding?

Bitches can continue to bleed after mating. Some stop and some don't. Are you absolutely sure she was ready? Was there any serious flirting going on between them? I have never had a bitch that was really ready ever try to 'sit'. They tease and move around and generally taunt the male but when they sit down I take it as a sign they don't want it. She may not have ovulated. some bitches ovulate on days in the 20's.

I think she was flirting with other dogs passing by, which line up at the front of the house by the way, by showing her behind facing the gate making the dogs outside lick her and my dog becoming more desperate in mounting. Plus her discharge is lessening. So I asked around and they said she may not prefer my dog. Then yesterday on her 17th day I noticed my dog was being less interested to even abandon her and sleep away from her, but mounts when I drag him closer, by which I thought was a sign that my bitch is coming out of season. So I began assisting themm earlier.

To be honest unless this is a toy breed (and not one of the toy breeds where due to health reasons it is best to wait until they are 2 1/2) 18 months is too young to be taking a litter from your bitch.

I would certainly not be trying for a second mating and leave it until she is more mature, especially as this is only her second season, that would point to her not being an early maturing bitch.  Most people would say the third season is soon enoughs nd most breeds about two to three years of age for a first litter.

The bleeding is probably normal, mine never stop until the end of the season anyway.

Is the dog an experienced dog with mating bitches.  I have used an inexperienced dog and it came to nothing as he didn't mat the bitch when she was at the receptive stage but waited until she had gone over and no pups.

Unless you have your bitch progesterone tested you won't know if it is too late for her.

I have had bitches take to being mated on day 13 (more often days 15 - 17), and also my last litter the bitch wasn't mated until days 18 - 20, we had her blood tested as we and the stud dog owner were worried she had gone over, but the dog proved to be right in not wanting to mate her earlier.

I am rather concerned that other males have physical access t your bitch by being able to lick her through a gate.  At this time a bitch is open to infection, and there is always the risk a dog could mate her through the gate, or get into her, are you absolutely sure none of the singing romeos has got to her over the gate?.

Well Im taking her to her vet now just to be safe.

Yup the dog has successfully mated and fathered 4 pups with another bitch and even inherited his blue eyes.

About the other dogs, well I placed a metal mesh around the gate so as not to have accidents and the ground is tiled concrete and 6 feet high.

Well thanks guys youve been a lot of help.

I agree with everything in this post, some very good points made.

I would say that in my opinion that a bitch should be 2 at least before having a litter, this would be the equivalent to a 14 year old girl having a baby, so plenty soon enough for any breed.

In answer to your question, my girls colour usually comes back after mating, almost like they are back in season again, I've not had one miss so far, so to me that is perfectly normal.
