Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Im super upset - bitch being bred consecutive seasons :-(
- By triona [gb] Date 13.02.10 16:13 UTC
One of the family members dogs had a litter of puppies just under 2 years ago, this couple seem really nice and my uncle thought this was the best home for one of the bitches. To our horror that puppy had a litter of 13 at 15/16 months and and iv just found another advert from that lady online today that the bitch is expecting again so has been bred on consecutive seasons.

Iv been crying my eyes out, I don't know what to do.. she has done a cross so pups not papered otherwise id complain to the KC, Iv tried to complain on all the sites that she has advertised on but I get no responses. That bitch is only 4 weeks older than our Sophie and I just cant bare it. :(    What can I do??

I feel so sorry for you.  I know we all vet our potential puppy owners, and even turn down those we don't like.  But with the best will in the world, I guess sometimes we get it wrong.

My gut feeling goes with trying to get them targeted under the Animal Welfare Act.  It is the only way I can think of, as it is certainly a welfare issue in my eyes.

How can I do this? Who do I email or ring, I cant really do the RSPCA because in all intense and purposes the bitch is fed watered, walked and lives in the home so I don't think they will do anything. I really want to give them a peace of my mind but that wont solve the problem, I would have rung her by now but id just be very rude so no point. :( :(

Enforcing the Animal Welfare Act is down to the police (as far as I am aware.)  You can certainly check with DEFRA.

But I would most certainly be contacting Trading Standards too because I bet they are not registered as a breeder.  And breeding at every season is very much "puppy farmer" practise.

The RSPCA are worse than useless, and not worth your time.

I have just cut and pasted this from the Act.

Anyone who is cruel to an animal or does not provide for its welfare needs,
may be banned from owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison

Sadly if you are not a registered breeder it's not against any rulings, so I would think nobody could do anything!

True but I bet the tax man would be interested. Additional income and all that.

exactly what i was going to say!i think that would stop it dead.im sory to hear about this im sure id feel the same as most of us would.
if it were me id do everything until it stopped.id certainly not have been as calm as you id have been round and given em a mouthful.so good on you for not doing so.
please keep us informed its always good to know incase anyone eles has a problem like this i do hope you sort these people out.xx

Yep, I agree with Rocknrose and Tamara, get the tax man called immediately, that will shut them down as I doubt they logged down any expenses from the first litter, so it's your best bet to put a stop to it.

There is no ruling even by the KC to say people can not breed a bitch consecutively. IMO animal welfare won't be any good unless the bitch is in terrible condition and not cared for properly then maybe you have a chance. But the best way with people like this is to hit the pocket.

I would be devastated if this were one of my adult pups, feel so upset for you, ring the TAX OFFICE!

Well I rang round all the vets in their local area and sort of gave them heads up, many said they couldn't give me their info I said I didnt want their info I just wanted the vets to keep and eye out and please give a gentle talk when they came in, nearly all the vets agreed with me and said they would as they thought it was wrong.

But one p***** me off big style by saying she wasn't registered with him but he said its the norm for bitches to have litters at 15 months and if she was walked then could have recouped quick enough to have the second litter by 2 years of age, even after a big litter, hummm lets just say I wasn't too happy with him, as I pointed out that the bitch was technically still a puppy when she was mated and had the first litter. Though he did agree that the RSPCA probably wouldn't do much if she looked healthy.

So fingers crossed with me bugging the vets the internet sites that they advertise on and eventually the tax man I might be able to stop her breeding this bitch into the ground.

Im gunna leave it a couple of days before I ring the tax man as i'm too upset and seething at the moment

I'd also notify the Benefits agency, just incase as many folk are in receipt of working tax credit which is earnings based even if they're not on IS or IC and others have said taxman too with details of last litter ie adverts etc as much information as you can give will allow a successful outcome for this poor girl.

The number for the tax fraud hotline is 0800788887 and they will be interested but write down the details first as they will ask questions. It is a very effective means of putting the brakes on BYB.

Hi all i tryed to report my sister in law to the benifits and tax man as she has bred her bitch on every season since she started and has so far had 5 litter (all cross breeds) and sells them for £500 each. I reported her after the 2nd litter and 3rd but she is still doing it. she owns the bitch and the boy. I hate it but what more can i do?

Hello...The other people that might be interested is the local council. Most have policies about breeding dogs. Mine says 4 or more bitches or 4 litters in any 12 month period must be registered and inspected by them....pedigree or mongrels!

If she falls outside this quota they still may visit and keep an eye on things..it maybe enough to put her off.

Best thing to do is lobby govt to change the law to help prevent this sort of thing.   I don't think you can do anything about the individual case.

there are plenty of laws already that are simply not enforced.  You need to contact the council if laws are being broken, though I suspect that unless there are more than four litters bred in any 12 month the rule about 12 month litter spacing can't be enforced.
