is it worth insuring my puppy. They all seem to have quite a high excess of around £50 and all the treatments i've had so far have been under that. Is it worth it or should i just save the £20 per month for any treatment she needs in the future ?

Hi guest ..it is really up to you ..weigh the pros and cons of Insurance and/or saving the money up :) If you want to , type Insurance into the search engine on the forum and this will bring up lots of past discussions on the subject which might help you :)

If you manage to get through the next 10 to 15 years and never have to pay more than £50 you will be incredably lucky. I pay more than that a month just to keep one of mine on the tablets he needs.

There is no hard and fast or easy answer to this one. Some people pay out for years on insurance never to make a claim - others don't get insured and have bills running into thousands. I do know people who have "doggy funds" where they save an amount equivalent to an insurance premium in the hope that it will cover any potential costs. It is a risk though.
The main thing to remember about most insurances is that they don't cover the routine visits to the vets such as innoculations, boosters, neutering nail clipping, de-matting etc - but usually cover illness and accidents. So you will normally have to find a certain amount each year come what may. Some will cover your dog for life - others only up to a certain age. What they are consistent with is they will not cover existing conditions - so it's no good changing your mind when fido develops a chronic illness/condition cos you won't get any cover.
I guess it comes down to how much your dog means to you and are you in a position to pay a lot of money should an emergency happen before you get your savings fund up and running.

I never had insurance until one of my Boxers had a heart problem and cost a fair bit for treatment. After that I had insurance and although I only used it once it saved me a £700 bill. Even if you decide against vet insurance it is worth making sure you have 3rd party cover. I have up to £2 million with the insurance I have

I took out insurance for my dogs but i do remember thinking to myself after 4 years about all the money i had paid in insurance and never claimed a thing.
Then one of my dogs broke its leg while playing in the park , even though she is only a small dog the bill came to £1500 and i was so glad to have her insured other wise not sure where i would have found that kind of money.
