Does anybody know anything about having hypnosis for eatingh/smoking or cessation of other addictions?

My OH has been hypnotised 3 times to stop smoking, the first 2 lasted about 6-12 months each time, the last time however used hypnosis and NLP (neuro Linguistic Programming), this was about 3 years ago, and he's not desired a ciggie since. He was so impressed with it, he's now undertaken the training to become an NLP practitioner himself. He wants to specialise in weight loss, but it can work for a wide range of "issues", he has a client coming in who wants to regain some enthusiasm for exercise in general.

Like anything, success depends on the willingness of the person undergoing it to actually want to change the behaviour. If for example a person wants to stop smoking because their OH doesn't like it, then it probably won't be as successful as someone who truly wants to stop for themselves.

If you have any questions PM me and I'll ask "him indoors".

There is a guy here who came to our work, for a 'Lunchtime teach in'.
He does psychotherapy and hypnotherapy, he also teaches in quite a few places and does corporate smoking cessation groups, he seemed really good. Although at my place of work he was concentrating more on the medical aspect. (he also covers a major London hospital)
I am wondering if he could do it for me for compulsive eating!
My family think I am mad, I gave up smoking using my will power years ago, so I think I should be more strong minded. I have done weightwatchers and know that I can follow that route to lose weight............but...........I feel I have some self destruct food thing going on.
I feel this may help.

I have done it twice two different people. I found it very strange as although I was relaxed to a point I was still very aware of my surroundings and felt I could stop at any point. Now this may be what happens I was too shy to ask but not what I expected. Both times were for weight loss. The first time I have know idea if the hypnosis had anything to do with it but i embarked on another ww regime and lost almost enough weight to reach goal. The second time a few years later I tried again having put back the weight and more this time I struggled to lose much at all even with a diet.
Overall I have know idea if or how hypnosis works but would not be put off trying again the problem is cost.
The first guy also did nlp I dont know if that made any difference.
Be very interested to hear more from others

I was the same as furryfriends.  out of 'it' but still aware of all around me.  I went for dentist phobia.  it didnt have me jumping for joy at going to the dentist. but I didnt wet myself either!

Apparently a hypnotic state, is just a really really relaxed one. OH did practice on me ( I must be mad), and i was expecting to be asleep and unaware, but just felt really chilled. Like you guys was totally conscious of everything that was going on (sounds etc).

THe thing with weight is usually just trying to drill down what has changed that makes food something to be coveted, rather than just a fuel. Most children have to be actively encouraged to eat, they're far more interested in getting away from the table and back to what they were doing.

At least now I know my experince was "normal" I know what you mean about young children. It is interesting to see that my 20 year old still only sees food as fuel and although enjoys what he eats rarely snacks. My daughter is much more inclined to snack and graze rather than stop to eat meals. Funny as they both have me as their Mum so I would expect them to have similar eating habits. Wish I could just see food as fuel !

That is so interesting about children and fuel.....It is so correct too.
I wonder when the shift comes about?
When I am busy it's true to say that the first indication that it is time to eat is usually because I feel sick because it's hours past usual meal time.
Normal routines though are worked around mealtimes.
I think I may have to give this man a go, he is very booked up so I will have a wait, which gives me time to think about it too.

Hi my sister is a qualified in NLP and hypnosis, if you'd like anymore information about it pm me and I can give you her website etc.  It really does work and it can change your whole outlook on life.

The shift is different from person to person, in some it doesn't kick in at all. OH knows of one case were the mother was always on a diet, so "inflicted" her eating habits onto the kids, resulting in one of the children using paper round money to buy (and hoard) sweets, so should mum have another of her fads, they had something available to them.

Their sibling however doesn't have any food issues, and obviously had the same upbringing.

It's fascinating stuff really.

That's exactly what hypnosis is all about.  I trained in hypnosis and NLP 15 years ago and NLP is the way forward, helped if you are in a relaxed state - hypnosis.  But just NLP on its own can be very powerful.

I wouldn't be impressed by anyone who did group hypnosis for any sort of therapy.  People react in different ways as they relax and it really does need to be 1-2-1 to deal with it in an effective and professional way.

This is a very interesting thread , now you have got me interested in having another go with the emphasis on an NLP practioner
