My vet has just closed so I can't phone them and I was just wondering If anybody knows whether it is ok for me to worm my bitch while she is still feeding her pups. She is 4 weeks overdue as I didn't want to worm whilst she was pregnant and pups are 2 weeks old now so wonder if is would be wise to wait until the pups are weaned.

Nursing bitches need to be wormed at the same time as the puppies - usually 3 weeks, 5 weeks and 7 weeks - or they just keep reinfecting one another. Your vet will recommend a suitable wormer for these circumstances.

Would it not be best to weigh and worm them yourself, at home, rather than risk infection at the Vets?

Mum really should of been wormed from Day 40. Pups and mum need to be wormed 2, 5 & 8 weeks with panacur 10%.

Think others have said, but best to weigh your litter at home. Scales from Argos are good, mine were £14.99. I weighed my puppies twice aday morning and night to check progress, you can print off a weight record to keep update with the gains.

I carry out exactly the same regime as Lois.

As my bitches have Panacur while pregnant, it's what I carry on with.  When pups get their 3 day course, I worm mum.  But NOT for 3 days.  She gets the normal adult dose for one day (during pregnancy it's a quarter dose from day 40.)

I have a fantastic set of electronic scales that I use each evening to check progress but my vet will not prescribe the wormer on my weigh-ins alone and said he needs to weigh them himself to be sure of the doseage. He also prescribes Panacur susp sp I can't see why if certain vets will take your word for the pups weight then he won't...maybe he is just being over cautious...or maybe he wants a consultation fee!!!!! Cheeky b*gger. I will ask again tommorrow.

I weigh mine on electronic scales too, and have no problem working out the correct dose.  Dare I say it?  Your vet knows that he can double the charge if you do it his way!

My vet is pretty good at giving me discounts, and I still order Panacur at almost half the price!  They don't charge P&P for wormers, and the delivery is fast.

Hope that helps!

My pups are just over 2 weeks old and have just wormed them with drontal puppy suspension, and mother with drontal plus, i have always done it this way with no problems, oh and mum is wormed before mating her too.

I buy them online.
