neighbors 5 month colle they have had for 6 weeks she is asking me about him still pooing in the house whioch i have tried to give her advice for BUT hes eating his own poo and if he can their other dogs poo as well
i have never had this problem and cant tell her any advice
can anyone tell me?

Putting pineapple juice on the dogs food will stop them eating it at the other end.

My dogs won't eat their food if it has pineapple juice on it!  The only thing I've found stops them (until they grow out of it) is picking it up before they have chance to eat it, not much help if it's in the middle of the night though : (

I've tried everything going and can't stop mine. The pineapple doesn't work , feeding charcoal doesn't work , putting tabasco sauce on the poo and leaving it until they've had a lick (urghh) didn't work either. The only thing I do is run straight out and pick it up.

I'm presuming he has had a trip to the vets to make sure he doesn't have any nutritional deficiency? An inappropriate diet can result in coprophagia (poo eating) particularly if they are feeding food that isn't easily digested and comes out quite tasty the other end! Also if he is doing it in the house perhaps he has a dietary problem that means that he goes often and can't wait to get outside. Of course pups do poo in the house until they learn so it may simply be just because he is a baby but its best to rule out any physical cause.
Sometimes its best to ignore and distract, Being fastidious and cleaning up as soon as it happens is reccommended, but try to avoid doing so when the  pup is watching as it may be he is trying to clean up too! Some dogs that have been punished for pooing in the wrong place may try and avoid punishment again by removing the evidence because they are anxious about being told off again. Others simply find it as a way to get attention when the owners rush to try and stop them eating it. Going outside and rewarding the pooing outside will help with the toilet training but also keeps their mind off eating it at the same time. Play a game, give a couple of treats and lots of praise, then put pup away whilst you clean it away.

don't know if you have tried 'deter' tablets made by Shaws, used them with few dogs and they seem to work ok - better than pineapple.

My puppy was doing this occasionally I am sure because he got such a great reaction from my sons--:) loads of screams of disbelief, "He's never coming near me again!" type stuff. The pup thought it was just sensational, he was grinning from ear to ear. Luckily he is a little more sensible now, though today's casualty is a lampshade...

Tabasco flavoured poo...it's like a nightmare! Just imagine some of those TV chefs on this topic...all right, maybe it's just my sense of humour.

Yes I tried deter also , had no effect on my dogs. I haven't tried the new one that JAY15 found on petmeds I'll have to give that a go.

I know people thought I was mad sprinkling tobasco on it , ( I hope the neighbours weren't watching!)  my vet told me to try it as it worked with a pup she'd had.

I was told to try the pineapple and if that didn't work to try about 1" of grated courgette added to the pup's dinner.  Had a courgette in the fridge at the time and it worked - so didn't have to try the pineapple, but I know folks who it has worked for.

ROFL!!!  Don't you just love 'em!  There is nothing like a dog owner for talking about dog poo in great detail.  I reckon that we all have a faulty gene!  :-)

I think I can beat all of you as I have a dog that will eat the poo from another AS IT COMES OUT! No chance there of removing it or sprinkling anything on it! He's perfectly healthy but it's become a habit and I've given up now. I pointed it out to my husband who said "Yuck, and I let him lick my face!" to which I laughed, so he added "and then I kiss YOU!" Groan.

The stool repelum is not something I would advise anyone giving their dogs, here is a write up on it from another site,

Stool Repel - UM helps deter your dog from eating their own stools. It is suitable for both puppies and dogs and comes in a palatable chicken liver flavour.  

Active ingredients:

Oleoresin Capsicum: A chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears and mild pain. The active chemical called capsaicin causes a burning sensation and inflammation of the mucous membranes. This is the active ingredient that helps to repel the animal from eating its own faecal waste.

It really isn't worth using anything that irritates the mucous membranes and causes pain or discomfort - Oleoresin Capsicum is the active ingredient in pepper spray.  Really much better off and more reliable teaching a good leave.

Thanks karenclynes--it just goes to show that the products that are listed on these websites should always be checked! Thanks for reminding me of that little lesson, I wouldn't dream of using anything on my dogs that caused them discomfort.

I am ashamed to say that I think I learned the habit of poo talk when my children were small, starting with the incident of brassicas and their impact on breastfed babies :-o

...bit of a shocker for a new parent who had less idea than the family cat when it came to what she was doing with a baby.

Hiya, no worries, I think of all the places that sell it that's the only one that actually states what's in it, so a lot of people will buy and probably use it without knowing the implications.

I had a dog like this a while back & my 2 pups seem to be going this way. Pineapple has proved to be useless.

Marianne that's disgusting!! Mind you if it's your own dogs at least you know they are healthy, wormed etc. My Yankee scavenges poo he finds on walks, and goodness only knows the state of health of that! And people in Suffolk seem no better at picking up than the people in London were..... :-(

The pineapple doesn't work
I believe it has to be fresh pineapple - something to do with enzymes.
