Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Bait!
- By Blossom [nl] Date 10.02.10 14:18 UTC
Just wondering what you all use as Bait.

What do your dogs really love?

Do you only use whatever it is that you use as Bait for shows so that it is a real treat?

I use liver as it seems the "norm" but I'm not sure if there is something tastier!

So out of pure curiousity what do you all use?

:)

Slices of sausage - something that I can nibble at myself to get the dog's attention in extreme distraction!
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 10.02.10 14:32 UTC
I have tried just about everything and liver is the only one that works for my dogs .
My sister uses cheese.

I use liver and fish 4 dogs twists, which  I break up in to small peices.
- By Blossom [nl] Date 10.02.10 14:34 UTC
My dogs love cheese too!  I did use it once as bait but the weather was a bit hot and it went a bit sweaty and mushy lol!

Not seen the Fish4dogs twists - have seen the stars, they look quite nice :) for the dogs I mean!

just baked liver chopped finely...
nothing else works but she works for that!

I use Coachies and if it's a really special show then I break out the smelly James Wellbeloved fish and parsley treats. She knows that she has to be extra good when I get those out. Bless her!

I usually have a selection of baby bell cheese, cocktail sausages & i was using liver but Razzle seems to get the runs with it so I tried meat balls, which he loooooooooved & he didn't get a runny bum!

Chicken, but mine would actually work equally well for bits of her normal food, she's food mad!!
- By Abbeypap [gb] Date 10.02.10 16:05 UTC
either use garlic sausages or liver cake either of these two will get there attention and actually have them standing still for a couple of mins at a time.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 10.02.10 16:10 UTC
My dogs are greedy, so will eat anything.  Don't do cheese or chicken as they get  hot and slimy yuck.  Dogs like that but I don't!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 10.02.10 16:27 UTC
Liver cake, tuna cake, cheese, ham or chicken usually.
- By sal Date 10.02.10 16:27 UTC
mine 'll eat anything .  liver cake, garlic sausage , sausages is the norm.
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 10.02.10 16:34 UTC
Does anyone know of anywhere to buy decent liver treats?  I cant bear the smell/feel/look of it raw so there is no way Im cooking it bleugh!
- By Abbeypap [gb] Date 10.02.10 18:11 UTC
some of our local training classes sell liver cake which is made by a committee memeber.  Maybe someone will make it for you if you ask.

Bernard Mattesons smoked sausage with garlic, liver and cheese. She is a bit "take it or leave it" with food, but find the variety keeps her interest.

I use liver cake, cheese or chicken, something I can eat myself, my friend uses Tripe sticks and puts them in her mouth to get her dogs attention, yuk!!!
- By fecimus [gb] Date 10.02.10 20:21 UTC
i use the supermarkets budget ham!! they love it and it doesnt go too manky in your pocket and it isnt too greasy!
also the hotdog sausages as the love these and they dont have the grease the others doo..

When we show the blind spitz we use aniseed sweets!! haha she doesnt eat these (i think she might break her teeth they are like rock) we just use these to get her attention and put them in the same bag as the ham and she gets the ham with the sent of the aniseed on them... (just take them out before u go in the ring!)

:D

Ham is also something I use, it is often very cheap - I buy the packs reduced at the end of the day at the supermarket and freeze them. Also my local butcher does ham trimmings cheap, very easy to pop in and get a handful for about 50p.

Sausages too, it's easy to get ready cooked cocktail sausages now. Until recently Iceland did a bag of pre-cooked cocktail sausages for £1 but now discontinued (grrr!) Very easy to keep in the freezer & take a handful when needed! However I have just seen that Lidls do a decent size chilled pack for just over £1.

Tried hot dog sausages but they were too wet & squishy.
Liver and liver cake is really the best but a nightmare to cook! I have heard that you can make stuff like tuna flapjacks and tuna cake which is said to be a big hit with dogs, not tried myself though.

- By tooolz Date 10.02.10 22:14 UTC
A little white fluffy mouse that makes a teeny weeny squeak.

I have a little dog who will show for this all day :-) but wont touch anything food-like.

<BG> tooolz if I carried one of my cats around I would get my girls  full attention
- By Blossom [nl] Date 11.02.10 09:37 UTC
A toy squeeky would be a good idea I think.  Hmm now where do I find one small enough!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 11.02.10 10:59 UTC
I used to have just the squeaker from a toy - made my boy use his ears beautifully trying to work out why my hand was squeaking!

These are good but pricey, there is usually a stand at Crufts who sell the buckets on show offer - about 1/2 price - last year I got 2 and they are on my list of 'go to' for this year.

Liver and garlic! Stinky but it works a treat ;-)

I drain the juices off the liver into a bowl, crush two small or one large clove of garlic into the juice and stir it in. Chop the liver up, spread it onto greaseproof paper on a tray, pour over the garlicky juice and bake at gasmark 6, middle shelf, for about 35-45mins.

Chop it into nibble sized bits and away you go!

My easily distracted 5month old pug pup will do anything for it lol :-)

ebay believe it or not !!

I personally cant use treats in the ring that my dog really loves because he will just dance around and attack my pockets !!  I usually just put a handful of cat biscuits in my pocket.
