It could be that none of the bitches were ready, but I think that the dogs is as you say not interested. This may be that is he has been kept on his own he has missed out on the play mounting most dog go through, or it might be that he did go through that stage and was told off for it. Is your friend experianced in handeling a stud dog, if not perhaps someone who was could help. But to be honist I think having got to 2 years old he may not ever be interested. Could seek the advice from the vet but unless he is carring a line that will be lost or is of a breed with very small numbers then it is probably not worth the trouble. Ja:)kie

Hi,
I had an absolutely stunning akita male who had done very well on the showbench but when it came to breeding he just wasn't interested. We tried to mate him to 8 different bitchs but he just sniffed & danced about a bit then lost interest. The bitchs were in season properly because our other male done the business. He was also 2 years old so we had him upto the vets and they done some tests & a sperm count but unfortunately it turned out he was infertile & the vet said that would be the problem because he wasn't produce the correct hormones to make him want to breed & even if he had mated the bitchs they wouldn't have had pups anyway. So he was ruled out of our breeding program but we kept showing him, he is now 9 years old and retired living happily with a policeman.
I do hope this is not the case with your friends dog. Keep trying for a while longer & good luck.
Shonagh.

Sorry to hear that some of you have had problems Re:- Stud work, but glad to hear my Champion dog is not a one off.
We do entirely blame ourselves for this situation though,as a youngster when he mounted his mother and sister obviously he was told not to,and as we don`t put our males to public stud it was a few years before we had a bitch that was suitable to put to him.
We new we were taking a chance because as with bitches it is better to use a male as soon as he is mature.
There are exceptions to the rule ofcource(there always is with Mother Nature isn`t there?)We helped a friend who owned one GSP that he had made up to a FT Champion to mate his dog as he decided he would like a pup out of him before he was too old ,I think he was about 4.1/2 and had never had a bitch but because he had always lived alone he had never been told not to mount and I think that is were he differed from our dog.We did have to show him what to do and got a tie and when the bitch returned for a second mating he new exactly what was expected of him.
There is hormone treatment available for the reluctant stud, but what you have to bear in mind is why is he not performing? It is said that dogs showing this tendency should not be bred from in case they pass it on to their offspring. That is something that needs discussing with your vet.
It could be that your dog just needs someone with a little experience even some young ones who have been trying to mount everything in site has to be shown what to.Stud dogs have also to be taught
manners when it comes to mating but thats another topic.

Deerhounds are often reluctant studs. I've been lucky and a suitable bitch has come along for the boys when they were young, but that is unlikely to happen again so I've been toying with an idea and would be interested in opinions. Do you think it would be dangerous / unethical / plain wrong to let a young dog mate a bitch you don't want him to make pregnant and then take her for morning after treatment?

In a word, yes, I do think it would be unethical as I feel that the injection the bitch would need should not be taken lightly....but that is just my opinion :-)
Hi Sharon, yes I agree with what Sarah has said.

We used a rottweiller dog on our champion bred Fantasa bitch and he was 8 years old never mated a bitch in his life but he certainly knew what to do there was no stopping him:D. He sired 10 pups first time round & the litter was such good quality we used him again 1 year later & he sired 12.
Maybe your dog just needs time.:)

I don't know where you live but there's someone in Stafford who helped me with the same problem. I have written on this site and I think my title was He's a Man, it was about Melvyn my pomeranian.
He still won't mate here or at other people's houses, he just does the same as your dog, but the man in Stafford had him mate a bitch no problems and he has done this twice since. Unfortunately we haven't had any live pup's resulting from this, as the last one was breach and took almost an hour for the vet to get it out, but at least we know now that he's got it in him. Mel was 5 yrs. old before he mated a bitch and we were losing hope.
Good luck any way.

any idea of his name or how to contact him?

I think if the dog is two already and does not want to mate. Then he
will never mate a bitch. If it had been just the one bitch then I would
say she was not ready. Where do they take them to mate? You say
he sits up the corner. Do they do it inside the house?
I also know of a man in the Norfolk/ Cambs area that will come and help with
the mating of dogs. He is supposed to be brilliant. So if you are in this area
e-mail me.

My springer showed a total disinterest when at the age of 4 he was introduced to his first willing bitch in the summer. I posted on the boards here and did get lots of advice. The bitch was left with him for 4 days in total and we did not witness any "happenings", just a lot of flirting and play. She kept us waiting until 2 weeks before the birth before showing signs of pregnancy, and then produced 8 healthy pups!
This weekend, he has had bitch number two, and certainly knew what to do. That was this morning, and they have been as calm as anything all day, in contrast to yesterday when he was getting very worked up and are currently asleep infront of the fire together - how romantic! Just wait and see once more.
Don't give up - I despaired after tales of the dogs being tied for hours on end, I didn't even witness a slip mating but left to his own devices and with the help of a willing bitch he worked it out for himself.
ps my neighbours dog won't mate in the house and needs to be in the garden!

Hello Jenny,
I have just joined this group and thought your letter fantastic, bet that bitch really livened up the life in your old boy. I too have a large breed (great danes) and one of my males was not used until he was seven and a half years old. He done the buisness without any extra help and with a huge smile on his face, sadly he fired blank and probably had done all his life. He was happy and finally a MAN. He lived for a good many years after that. I just wished that my old boy had fathered some puppies that would have made my day.
