Does anyone have any knowledge and or experience of hand rearing a new born pup?
How often do they need grub?
How much grub?
He's been taking 10mls every 2 hours but I have been told that is too much as he only weighs 12ozs.
What food should I be using he is on 'Puppy Colostrum' from 'HVS The Veterinary Supplies Co' in Co Durham. The vet has given us WELPI so should he be changed.
He is now about 30 hours old.

Hi Long...have just been in this situation myself, here is what I did. Fed every 4 hours...colostrom for the 1st 48 then on to Lactol. For a puppy that weighed 1lb 5oz at birth, each meal of milk was 20ml then as she got heavier, over period of 5 days, upped it in quantity & reduced frequency. This, however, was for a pup that was getting some milk from mum...just not enought due to her being a bit smaller than the others in the litter and getting pushed off the teat. At 9 days old, now, she has caught up in size with the others...weighs 2lb 5 oz and just has two feeds of 80ml each feed. Hope this helps.

i had to bottle feed my first litter for 5 days as the bitches milk vanished for a while-i fed them every 2 hours as much as they would take, i preffered lactol as i managed to mix it with less lumps than the other,---most pups will only take enough, so id give them it :D , good luck,

I like Lactol as well because of the mixing. I give it a whizz in the liquidiser to get all of the lumps out, feed 2 hourly, and give as much as the pup will take at each feed. Best of luck with the puppy.
Thanks for everyones response
I think I just needed a little reassurance from people who had first hand experience of hand rearing. The pup has had a good night and seems to be doing OK (Cant say the same for me though!!)
We have never had a bitch had a C section before, they have all delivered normally so this alone was a first for us.
The bitch herself is a maiden bitch who has a wonderful temprement and we thought would make a lovely mum as she mothered the last litter, so it is very upsetting to see her reject her puppy.
We have kept putting the pup to her to suckle by one of us holding her and the other one seeing to the pup, thinking that once he started feeding from her she would take to him but she hasn't. The bitch has no milk at all now and does not seem to have bonded at all with the little fellow. So it looks like I have myself a full time job! Maybe if there had been more than one puppy it may have been different story but we will never know. After the C section we asked the vet if there had ever been any other puppys in there and he said not, she was really huge so i cannot understand this, the puppy was big but not that big, she must have bee carrying a lot of water.
Once again thanks for the replies
