Topic Dog Boards / Health / HELP PLEASE - BELLA IN THE VETS!
- By MandyC [gb] Date 29.01.10 10:56 UTC
Hi Everyone....me AGAIN

This morning Bella collapsed very suddenly, she was fine one minute then had a scared look in her eye, spun in a circle collapsed and pee'd herself, she is in the vets now and he thinks it is either a blood clot (complication of amputation surgery) or her heart...either way things look really bad. Just wanted any experiences of either problem and if anyone has a heart dog that is managed on meds as he said the heart is possibly managable.

I am absolutely distraught to be honest and cant believe things are still so crap for me and my dogs right now, it feels like its never going to stop.

She had coughed a couple of times the last two days and yesterday morning there was a wee in the bedroom, both bella and crystal sleep in the bedroom and i assumed it was crystal done a naughty, as bella is immaculate in the house but after seeing her this morning i am wondering if she has had some sort of turn in the night and pee'd herself then too. I am so worried as i have been warned it is very serious. After going through the amp surgery 2 months ago i will be devastated to lose her to something else so soon.

Any advice please :(

Sorry, I've no advice. Just wanted to offer you a great big cyber-hug. How worrying for you :( :(
I hope you find out what's wrong with Bella quickly.
Poor you, you've had such rotton luck with your dogs health lately, it really must be wearing you down :(

Take care and best wishes for Bella.
xx

Oh dear you've really been through it, haven't you. :( You'll probably know I always mention my cavalier Rufus. He was 7 when he was diagnosed with a grade 6 heart murmur (=the worst possible) and my then vet said he would not live to see Christmas, but we put him on heart medication to see how he'd do. That was 2002. He will be 15 next month and yes NOW he does nothing but sleep and eat and have the rare walk but aged 9, after 2 years on medication, he went back to training classes and in just 3 weeks passed his Good Citizen Silver AND Gold!

Mandy I am so, so sorry.  I don't have any advice to give, but I know that you must be demented by now.  As if you haven't been through enough.  Just to say that I amthinking of you.  Jean

I was hoping you would see this as i do remember you talking about your cav but couldn't remember the details. What frightens me is the suddenness of the 'attack' it came out of no-where really she had eaten her breakfast 2 minutes before she collapsed. I am praying that if it is her heart she can also be managed on meds. Have just rang the vets to check on her and she is much calmer and has been up on her legs (which she couldnt do when i took her in)

I think i will be grey by the end of the year....i am SO worried

Thanks marianne your story gives me a ray of hope
- By Justine [gb] Date 29.01.10 17:31 UTC
:( oh Mandy what a nightmare for you.

I hope your vet can get to the route of the cause.

I wonder if she's just got a virus as they can collapse with high temp.

There seems to be lots of chest virus's going about in dogs at the mo.  I had Remi at the vets twice in the last week with her chest and high temp. She was quite poorly too.

That sounds better news that Bella is standing up again.  She's a trooper and I hope she recovers quickly and you can have her home.  {{{{big hugs to you xxxx}}}}

Bella is home and stable for now, she is back in first thing tomorrow for chest xrays and the concern now is a tumour in her chest. My vet wants to do a few things tommorrow but wants her body to settle as her system went into shock this morning so he feels the sedation is a little risky, but i have to find out what is wrong so we have a chance at least of helping her.

I must say that when she is sedated in the morning i will be preparing myself for the worst in that she may not wake up, or if she does have cancer in her chest we may have to let her go there and then.

It will be a very long night tonight and i will be up with her as i wont leave her side.

Positve thoughts and prayers for my best girl please....i am heartbroken that she is going through yet more problems. :(

Hi,

Bella is back home again, her xray revealed she is in heart faliure, her heart is enlarged and she has various fluid spots in her lungs, my vet has said that this was an underlying problem and the amputation has brought it on quicker due to how much harder her heart has to work to carry the load on one leg. It does make me feel guilty about the amp and regret doing it as it has now only lead to something else.

He said due to her complication of 3 legs her prognosis on meds is poor. We are trying her on fortekor and fruseomide and will have to see if that improves her condition, we know though that realistically things look pretty bad and it will be about her quality of life. I am devastated about this and never dreamed i would lose her to a heart problem after all she has been through.

I'm so sorry for you and Bella. :-( :-( Please don't have regrets - what you did you did for the best possible reasons.
- By furriefriends Date 30.01.10 14:57 UTC
I am so sorry for you both, you have been through so much. As jeangenie said you did everything with her best interest at heart and it so awful for something you didn't know about to happen. x

Been following this thread but just didn't know what to say, i guess there are no words that really help apart form the vets saying she is 100% better again..

Really hope she pulls through this for you.. How is she in herself right now?
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 30.01.10 18:30 UTC
Really sorry to see this. Dont blame yourself, you did what you thought was right at that time & with the benefit of hindsight would probably do it again.
I know of a St. Bernard who has been in heart failure for about a year now. She still does ok.
- By MandyC [gb] Date 30.01.10 18:31 UTC
She is very weak and hasnt moved since we got home at about 1pm, i got her to eat a little ham and have a little drink, she did pee her bed but she has lasix injection again today to clear the fluid in her lungs.

She doesnt look happy and i do think that i know how this is going to go but have to give her heart meds a chance to do something for her, the vet said not to expect much improvement for at least 3-4 days so i am just trying to get through the next few days before i make any decisions. she is not in pain, just has NO energy level at all.
Heartbroken is an understatement after her fighting so hard against her other problems lately, she was doing amazing and i was so pleased and glad i made the decision to amputate....but now i feel very differently....it feels like i let her down and got it completely wrong, something i have felt before and had hoped i wouldnt feel again!

I will try whatever i can to help her but at the same time i will not let her suffer for me either
- By MandyC [gb] Date 30.01.10 18:34 UTC
Oh thank you wolfie, that gives me a little bit of hope, i think i am still in shock as to just how quickly this has all happened, 3 days ago she was trotting round the garden in her normal happy way so to see her so ill so quick has left me a little shocked. I pray i can give her a good quality of life with meds for a while at least.

I can offer no advice, only that what ever path you had chosen to take, you would feel guilty. If you hadnt amputated, you would have always wondered 'what if' youy have amputated and now still wondering 'what if' You really are in a loose position in that way. so DONT feel guilty xxxx
You have done what you feel right and whats best for Bella xxxxx

im so sorry for your dogs health problems, fingers crossed for you x
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 31.01.10 14:10 UTC
Hopefully once the meds kick in she'll be the same as before, it's just going to be hard to get through those days.
I had a dog with a brain tumour & was having seizures. He had to go onto Phenobarbitone & the 2 weeks for that to kick in was hell for both of us. When it did he was back to his usual self again.
In the meantime try not to let her pick up on your stress (hard I know) & see if you can 'gee her up a bit'. That might make her feel a bit better!

- By Justine [gb] Date 03.02.10 18:12 UTC
Mandy Im so sorry to read about Bella. :( What an awful shock for you. You have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about putting Bella through that op because you did the best thing for her, as she was improving so well up until this wasn't she.

I hope her Meds kick in soon and she is back to her normal self.  I'll keep everything crossed for you both xx

Any news on Bella ???
- By MandyC [gb] Date 03.02.10 23:40 UTC
Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes for Bella.
She is a little brighter today and is eating very well, she is still coughing but is on a course of AB's to help clear the fluid and stop any chest infection so hopefully that will settle that down.

She is still VERY tired very quickly but there is a glimmer of hope as she is alot brighter than she was at the weekend, wagging her little tail and enjoying all the fuss. I am staying in the living room with her so i can hear if she gets into any trouble with her breathing, havent left her at all since friday.
Fingers crossed she can be comfortable and stay managed on the meds.
My biggest fear is that when the AB's stop she may get into trouble again, we will just have to take one day at a time and see how she copes, she is such a fighter and i will fight every step of the way with her.

Im looking every day and keeping my fingers crossed for Bella & hugs to Mandy as well.
- By Justine [gb] Date 04.02.10 16:43 UTC
That sounds better Mandy. :)

Remi had a set back last week with her chest again and was quite poorly so she's on ab's again, and we're now trying her on Corvental  D 500mg tablets now that open up the airways.  These are also used for heart failure.  She only has 1 a day and we have 2 weeks supply so I will see how she gets on but she can stop on them indefinately if they work.

They weren't cheap from the Vets as they had to order that mg in but I've mooched the online chemists and can get them cheaper on there, so I will ask my vet for a prescription if she is ok on them.

I think with the worry and stress these dogs give us, I'll definately be needing a face lift before long!

Hope Bella improves as the days go by and the tablets work well for her :) xx
