Topic Dog Boards / Health / 7 month puppy sick after worming
- By hendrix [gb] Date 28.01.10 10:28 UTC
Hi, our 7 month old cross Pyrenees Akita has recently been sick; vomiting, diarrhoea, listless and uninterested in food (very unlike him). This has occured after a Dose of Drontal XL. This is only the second time he has been wormed, the first being at about 3 months old. I'm worried that by not regularly worming him I have possibly allowed a severe case of worms to develop and perhaps caused him irreversible damage. Does anybody have any advice, on what I should do?

Dominic how long has your pup been like this for?

I personally would be getting him to the vet for the symptoms that you have mentioned.
Sometimes dogs can have a reaction to wormer, but better to be safe than sorry.
Has he got hold of something he shouldn't of or eaten something he shouldn't?

I'm sure you'll get some more replies soon but I think that vomiting after Drontal is not uncommon.  Mine certainly did on one occasion so I Googled it...  It seems that others have had better results with Panacur.

I don't recall that mine was as ill as yours sounds so perhaps a vet visit, or at least a tel call, is in order.  Hopefully it's just a delicate stomach from the wormer

Incidentally when I checked with the vet (tel call) she assured me that as long as xx no of hours had passed between dosage and sickness that he wouldn't need worming again.  I cannot remember the timings she gave me, sorry.

My two toy poodles tend to be sick after Drontal so i started giving them half the dose first and then the other half about half an hour later and this seemed to work for them. I mentioned it to the vet and she said she couldn't understand why it would make a difference but if it worked to carry on doing it that way.

Hi, thanks for you replys. With regards to how long he has been sick, he 1st vomited 2 days ago, tuesday at about 9.00, this was about an hour after taking the wormers in his food. He is now eating, although with less vigour than usual, and he appears to have regained much of his former vitality, which is a great relief. We did also spray some flea treatment around the house and there is a possibility that he might haved lick something on which it had been sprayed (he managed to escape, upstairs) although from the replys it seems most likely that it is the Drontal.

Fortunately he seems to be getting better, so I'll keep a close eye on him rather than taking him to the vet, if however his symtoms persist or get worse I'll certainly take him for examination.

Also, as he was sick about an hour after treatment do I need to give him another treatment or would that be long enough?

I wouldn't hang on until he gets worse.  I would be at the vet.  He has obviously not been wormed often enough, and worms could already have caused intestinal damage.  I think, if it was me, I would be taking in a faecal sample too.

I would also take such a young pup to the vets , especially if I thought he had licked house flea spray plus having the wormer.. as you should keep them out of the area for a min of half an hour or until completely dry. It is a poison after all!

As for the wormer never had a pup or  adult dog sick after drontal although I know some can be but with other symptoms ie listless ..not eating etc then a vet visit would be my first port of call and would come out smiling if it was a wasted journey knowing my puppy was healthy.

My douge de bourdeaux puppy had the same reaction to a different worming syrup when she was three months old I took her to the vets and they gave her an injection and tablets to stop the diarrhoea and sickness she also needed to be wormed again. I now use the tablets from the vets and she is fine. I would take him to the vets just to get him checked. She did however have bad diarrhoea with blood spotting for about 2weeks after but the vet said it was normal as her stomach had been badly upset. He may just have a sensitive stomach.

One of mine has reacted to Drontal with sickness, stomach cramps & loose poo. The first time I didnt make the connection but the second time it happened I realised. Will never give it to her again.

i think i most be lucky , all 5 of mine have drontal plus and none have ever been sick on it ...they do get abit loose after but thats about it ,mine are worse when i flea them !!...but i dont do the 2 at the same time alway give a few day to a week before doing 1 or the other ,hope your boy is doin better?

I've always done the worming and flea treatment on the same day to no adverse effects until i got my youngster, he was sick, and now i know i can't do the same together with him. Like White Lilly when they need doing around the same time i give a 2 week window for their bodies to settle down.
Have wormed him since without the flea treatment and he's fine on it.

Over the counter worming syrups will never be as effective as the veterinary recommended wormers.  And the bleeding from your girl could have been due to intestinal damage actually caused by worms.

I once bought a pup with such damage, and the worm burden had awful consequences.

I agree with JeanSW, my puppy was so full of worms (from the breeder) that when I wormed her with Milbemax she had diarrhea with blood and vomiting, and the biggest load of adult worms I have ever seen were passed. 2 weeks later she had Milbemax again ( vets instructions ) and no worms were passed and poos stayed normal and no bad effects this time. My vet told me that if a pup has a lot of worms then they WILL have the runs and sickness whichever good wormer you use, it is the body getting rid of the worms even if a little violently, and the internal bleeding will clear up although healing can take several weeks, but all should be fine once worms have gone. I now use Drontal puppy with no side effects, but would never use over the counter wormers.

This was my thought, as there is poor worming history then it may be the worms that have caused the issue.

A friend once took on a litter at 6 weeks as rescues.

they were pot bellied, dull eyed and had staring coats, but no meat on them.

She wormed them with Panacur as advised by the Vet and the info sheet.

I had never seen anything like ti, they puked them up, pooed them out, just loads and loads of live ones, and you normally don't see the worms when using panacur.

After the second days worming the pups were so ill and anaemic the vet told her not to give the third dose, but get them better and worm again in two weeks.

They went through a pot of bio yogurt daily (not each), and by 8 weeks were looking super.  They were then wormed again with no problems.

I always advise my new puppy owners to worm again at 11 weeks, then monthly (some wormers need to be used every two weeks) until 6 months, and then several times a year as appropriate to the situation.

Barbara, you have described it exactly!  Because I'd never seen worms with Panacur, it came as a bit of a shock to me!  It was my Border Collie boy, that, so say had been wormed with Panacur.  Well, I'd never seen this with Panacur!

I went to my vet and told him that pup was sicking and pooing spaghetti.  In many, many years with dogs, I had never seen anything this bad in my life.  I was nearly sick myself to see them moving.  Poor boy, his guts were in a state.  The vet said it was intestinal damage at the time.  Have to be honest, he must have been a mess inside, because he had the squits until he was 8 months old.

Once I found a food that suited him, he has never been changed from it, as it was such a relief to see normal poo.  He is wormed with Drontal now 2 -3 times a year and I never have any problems now.  Still use Panacur for pups though, and never seen it in a dog since.
