Hi all , i pick up my 8 week old Newfoundland in 2 weeks time. The breeder lives about an hours drive from my home.
My question is , what's the best way to get her home in the car , should i hold her on lap or buy a crate ?
I will be investing in a crate for her to use during car travel , but havent found a suitable one yet~would it be awfull to have her on my lap all the way home ? do you think the breeders will expect me to have her crate/carry box ready?
It's not a problem if you think thats best~just means rushing round for a crate !

I think on your lap in the back will be fine ,with a blanket or towel etc incase she gets sick ,
She'll be nervous and holding and talking to her will be reassuring for her :)
hee hee ..not long to go now !!

i know ! and i cant wait! i did think also that it would be best to hold her and keep her reassured, but i dont want to look like im not bothering by not having a crate ready ( if you see what i mean!) thats why i was interested to now what others would think~breeders etc if i just turn up with me , driver and a nice blanket!

Hi,
When we picked our pup up 3 weeks ago the breeder recomended that he sit on my wife's lap in the back with a blanket, and just re-assure him he was okay and make sure he was settled. We were a 2 hours drive away. He was a bit scared for roughly 30 mins then he settled and fell asleep. Our breeder also recomended a crate for him to sleep in at night and be his room within the house, He ordered one for us at cost price. We got a crate that will do him all his days for £45. So ask your breeder to see if they can order one in for you, its a lot cheaper than going to pets at home.
Good luck with your pup when it arrives.

David.

Some people say in a crate or carrier on the back seat so that you can still touch them but when we brought murph home ( all those moons ago ) he was quite nervous and so I held him ( a child either side within stroking distance :) ) and reasurred him
Another top tip is don't have the car too hot ( makes them feel sick :( )
How many more sleeps ?
( our kids count in sleeps to any big event )

Think it is the one and only time a pup should travel on the passengers lap. The only time I put a pup in a cage with another dog in the back too, is the only time I have had trouble with a dog disliking the car and being sick, and she never ever recovered. Ja:)kie

I brought Kass home on my knee and I think it actually helped her since when we got home and it was all new etc- new people to meet and greet she came back to me and hid behind my legs for support:) So I think it did her good that bit of *bonding* on the way home:)

Because we had a three hour journey home with Abby, and two hours with Ben, we used a small crate on the back seat, covered with a large towel to keep it dark. Ben was sick shortly after leaving Battersea, thanks to the vet nurse filling him with treats just before we left, so ended up on my lap for the rest of the trip. Abby settled in the crate, whimpered for about a minute, then slept until we reached our village! Both are good travellers.

well i emailed the breeders today who seem to agree that on my lap will be fine !.I thought it would~but didnt want to look like silly if a crate was expected ! ( instead i probably look like a worry wart!).
Ella was weighed yesterday and is now 13 lb 3 0z !! at 5 and a half weeks !!

Breeders prefer Worry Warts. ;)
