Hi, I am currently covered with 6 weeks free insurance through the Kennel club.
I have started to look for suitable pet insurance for our beagle who is 3 months old.
I have narrowed it down to a few, Direct line, more than and pet plan, but dont know what is best. Does anybody have any experience dealing with pet insurance in the past that could possibly help. i dont want to start a policy up then find out its not very good. I have heard from a few people that pet plan are good, but they are also the most expensive as well.

Thanks,
David.

Hi David,

Insurance is a tricky one it depends on ho much you want to pay and what cover.

I did a bit of research and for me MORE THAN with Sun Alliance was the best.

I pay £9.95 per month which also covers the purchase price of the dog, and I am sure that it covers £6000 per illness , for me I was happy with that. Some people like a amount that is renewed yearly but I was adviced that on "average" statistically £6000 was the max required for a particular illness. Which More Than I can use my existing vet who is about half the price of all other vet with large practices so I felt my £6000 would go as far as £12000.

Yes in some illnesses it can be £1000's in the first year but generally once diagnosed after treated the consecutive years are far less expensive.

Petplan also had good cover but I did not want to pay £18 per dog as I have 2 dogs insured and a cat.

Thank is my pennies worth.

Someone mentioned M&S Pet insurance this morning and I took a look, it does look like good value.

we use asda but cover is not lifelong. However we have just claimed over£4500 for Dimes accident and they were brilliant in dealing with the claim. paid out within less than 2 weeks and no quibble. i pay about £9 monthly for £5000 cover. Peyt plan is good but like Pam it is a lot as we have 5 dogs insured

PS David,

Get the new one running ASAP whoever you use, as you will have an exclusion time generally about 3 weeks from when you take the policy out till when you can actually claim from it.

If you puppy is 12 weeks and your insurance runs out in 2 weeks , do it now.

There have been a few people caught out on this before.

The one I went with when insuring my jointly owned import was Pinnacle. It had all the advantages of Pet Plan, cover for life, with the amount paid out reinstated each year (so not so much £ per condition covered for life, but so much £ per condition per year covered ongoing for life). Also the excess was less, as were the premiums.
