My elderly aunt has asked me to buy her a quiet kettle for her Birthday!   Her kitchen/living area is open plan and she can't hear the TV when the kettle is on!  Can anyone recommend a quiet/silent electric kettle?

Argos and Currys are probably your best bet. I did a quick search and found this at Argos and I'm sure if you look more they will have more in varying price ranges.

This gets a good review.....unless you are in a hard water area it seems !. Lime scale doesn't have to be a problem though, we filter all our water first and anyway, kettles can be cleaned.

Is that because it rumbles when boiling? Some of them do, and if on a worktop with nothing underneath it makes a good old sound. Could try putting the cordless base on top of something to insulate the noise.... Or the £5 kettle I got in ASDA a few months ago seems to be fairly polite in its behaviour.

I bought a De Longhi metal kettle (cream) and it is the worse kettle I have ever had. It is so noisy that you can't hear yourself speak and the lid is so difficult to take off to fill it.  Cost about £50 too.......

In her circumstances nothing will be very quiet.  The answer is to go for a rapid boil version and only heat enough for one cup.  The whole process is so fast you can make tea during the adverts or boring bits!

I bought a very stylish Morphy Richards earlier this year, it is sort of conical shaped with a curved handle right over the top - rather retro and pretty.  Not only is it the noisiest kettle I have ever owned it also whisltes on boiling!  I cannot remember anything at all on the box about whistling, but now everytime I boil the kettle the whistling is accompanied by all the dogs barking.  You cant even avoid the whistle by switching off just before it whistles, because it still whistles when you pour!  What about one of the Tefal fast boil things, I have seen them demonstrated in shops and they seem very quiet.  Also economical on electricity.

I have the reverse problem would love a whistling one, but they are too dear. 

I am forever putting the kettle on and it switches off without me realising.
