hi all
im after some more advice
my bitch is 64days from 1st mating and 62 days from 2nd mating
but when she had a scan at 4 1/2wks they told me she was only 3 1/2 wks
my question is since yesterday shes been off her food and when goes for a wee losing discharge
shes not digging or panting but sleeping alot pups r still moving about as can see them

is this all a sign she gonna start whelping soon
- By annastasia [gb] Date 24.01.10 12:04 UTC
She is imminent to welp, one of our females didnt dig or scratch, is she shaking or panting? good luck x
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 24.01.10 12:20 UTC
hi annastasia

no she isnt shaking or panting just sleeping on sofa nxt 2 me as wants 2 be near me all time
her whelping box is in my bedroom so its away from the other dogs

she goes in it when i have to pop out for school runs, shops ect
and sleeps in it at nite
- By annastasia [gb] Date 24.01.10 13:07 UTC
My female is the same wants to be near me all the time, she even sat on my knee before which is unusual for her she is usually such an independant little madam. she is day 58 today. just keep your eye on which you are already doing, i hate this waitin its nerve wracking isnt it? hope all goes well im sure it will, good luck x P.S we can talk on the forum if need too, we will both be having many sleepless nights soon.
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 24.01.10 13:12 UTC
yes it is nerve wrecking waitin for pups 2 come
i wasnt this nervious with her 1st litter but think its cos shes so big this time round
when she sits down her stomach and nipples touch the ground lol bless her

yes will have loads sleepless nites
yes that be great 2 have someone to talk 2 x
- By annastasia [gb] Date 24.01.10 13:52 UTC
Ah bless her, i dont think it gets any less nerve wracking, im nervous cos this is our girls 1st litter.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.10 13:52 UTC
sorry off topic but i carnt beleave your girl is now 58days annastasia :) good luck to both of you xx

i also have a girl that shows no signs before whelping i have to watch her like a hawk ...we know when shes ready to have them when she starts pushing :-O
- By annastasia [gb] Date 24.01.10 14:00 UTC

hi yeah this litter completely different she showin no signs at all apart from not eatin for last 2 days

i wondering if nothing has happened by mon when this is her 2nd due day if u know what i mean lol
how long should i leave her before takin her back 2 vets

as when had her scanned they said pups were a wk early then should be for dates x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.10 17:37 UTC
if it was me id go tues/wed for a scan just to check all is well ,because of dates from sacn not matching to mating dates ,would put your mind at rest ,but if you feel she is ok and looks ok apart from not eating wait alittle longer ...x
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 24.01.10 17:48 UTC
thanks whitelilly

i did take her 2 vets when she was 7wks pregnant 2 get her scanned as she was so big and wanted 2 make sure dates were all ok
but they refused 2 scan her
so i asked at what stage can u feel and see pups moving vet said 8 - 8 1/2 wks
and as soon as she was 8wks u could see and feel them movin
but i will keep a close eye on her and if nothing by tues/wed like u say i will ring vets again or take her 2 another vet
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.01.10 08:47 UTC
how is she today? with what you say about ya vets they might just say "not time because of scan" BUT if you feel worried i would find out if theres another good vets around you ,if your vets arnt much help! ....most vets dont breed so they go by text books most of the time ....regaurding her not eating she may just be sooo big thats theres no room left bless her! or it could be she could be starting soon ,fingers crossed she will start very soon and have a straight forward wheping :) .let me know how you get on good luck x
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 25.01.10 13:37 UTC
hi white lilly

she ok thanks just sleepin alot pups r still active as well so thats a good sign
- By Goldmali Date 25.01.10 13:46 UTC
I'm not sure how much I would trust this vet! How can they disagree with dates if you know exact dates the matings took place? And how can they refuse another scan when you're a paying customer? Finally when you can feel pups move depends on a lot -the size of the bitch, the size of the pups, the number of pups, where they are etc. I've got a pregnant bitch at the moment and I very clearly felt her pups move at 7 weeks, the only difference now at 8 weeks is the movements are stronger. In another bitch of the same breed I didn't feel movements until 9 weeks for one litter, but 8 weeks for another. There's no hard and fast rule.

hi marianne

yeah i cant figure the date thing out either but she was mated only twice which was the 21st and 23rd nov
so by mating she was 63 days sat or 63 days 2day

it was a young vet that did the scan and also the same vet that refused 2 do 2nd scan she said that sperm can sit in female for upto a week thats y she doesnt match mating dates

pups r still active which is a good sign

this is her 2nd litter and she whelped fine with 1st litter on time at 63 days

what would u advise in this situation should i take her back 2 vets 2 have her checked out
thanks again for all the advise
- By SharonM Date 25.01.10 16:53 UTC
I knew my girl was around 4 days out from her first mating by the scan going by bone visibility, this was around 6 weeks, plus normally I can pick up pups on scan at 3 weeks but it was closer to 4 this time, she whelped day 67 from 1st mating so I was right going by scan results.
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 25.01.10 17:26 UTC
hi all well phoned vets they told me bring her down for check up

took her temp which was 37 something

also gave her an internal and said she was opening up nicely

but they r a little comcerned she hasnt eaten now for 3 days,if she doesnt eat anything by tomoz they want her back for a possible c-section

other than this my vet was happy 2 leave her till at least 72 days from 1st mating(I WAS SHOCKED AT THIS)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.01.10 17:28 UTC
I had the same, but my vet said on palpating at 28 days post mating that they were not that far advanced more like 25 days or less.  She too whelped on day 67, her first litter was 5 days early and second on day 62.

What you need to remember is that experienced bitches that have had litters before are quite often willing and eager to stand earlier than they would have been, this means they could easily stand a day or so before ovulation, and as it takes two days after ovulation for eggs to be ready for fertilisation, a pregnancy can seem to last longer, especially if the litter is smaller.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.01.10 18:04 UTC
vets again ,i would never leave my breed to day 72 :-O .....some breeds can go this late but not all!!!! and i dont think your breed is 1 of them ?
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 25.01.10 18:27 UTC
well im hoping she gonna whelp in nxt 24 - 48 hrs

ive managed 2 get her 2 eat a little bit of food im just gonna give her little but often tonite and see

vets did say she was opening up nicely when she did internal and her temp was a good sign
- By pcs969804 [gb] Date 26.01.10 14:28 UTC
hi all just to let u all know she has started to whelp no puppies yet just digging and panting alot

i was at work when all this happened but my brother has kept an eye on her and ive been phoning every 1/2 - 1 hr to see if shes ok

she refused 2 stay in her whelpin box as well while i wasnt here
but now shes in it

she is now 66/64 days from 1st and 2nd matings
- By white lilly [gb] Date 26.01.10 15:04 UTC
